Rebel Wilson ready to enjoy 'Super Fun Night'

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Rebel Wilson says "Super Fun Night" burst from her own social misadventures.

The upcoming ABC sitcom focuses on her character and two gal pals who spend every Friday night together, avoiding contact with the outside world.

The Australian-born comedian-actress said she used to sit home many nights with pals watching DVDs. Then she resolved to spread her wings and force herself into social situations.

"Super Fun Night" draws on those experiences.

The series is produced by Conan O'Brien, who discovered Wilson as a guest on his TBS talk show. He said he knew right away he wanted to sign her for a series.

He described Wilson as "vulnerable, fearless" and among the most likable performers he's ever met.

They met with reporters at a session of the Television Critics Association.

New US penalties will greet Iran's new leader

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As Iran's new president takes over, new U.S. penalties against the country appear a done deal.

In a letter to President Barack Obama, 76 senators are demanding tougher punishment on Iran's economy until the Islamic republic scales back its nuclear program. It also urges Obama to consider military options while keeping the door open to diplomacy.

The Senate letter, a copy of which was obtained Saturday by The Associated Press, comes just days after the House overwhelmingly passed new restrictions on Iran's oil sector and its mining and construction industries. Senators are expected to take up the same package in September.

"Until we see a significant slowdown of Iran's nuclear activities, we believe our nation must toughen sanctions and reinforce the credibility of our option to use military force at the same time as we fully explore a diplomatic solution to our dispute with Iran," says the letter, which will be delivered Monday.

The Obama administration is concerned Congress' effort could undercut Iran's relatively moderate President-elect Hasan Rouhani, who was formally endorsed by Iran's ayatollah on Saturday and takes the oath of office Sunday. Rouhani has pledged to follow a "path of moderation" and promised greater openness over Iran's nuclear program.

Obama wants to give Rouhani a chance to prove his seriousness.

The U.S. believes Iran has been working for years to develop nuclear weapons. Iran insists its program is for peaceful energy and research purposes.

Rouhani's victory signaled Iran's clear dissatisfaction, the senators said. But they noted that all final decisions on nuclear matters rest with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and said Iran must not be allowed to use any new nuclear negotiations with world powers to stall for time.

"Iran today continues its large-scale installation of advanced centrifuges," their letter said. "This will soon put it in the position to be able to rapidly produce weapons-grade uranium, bringing Tehran to the brink of a nuclear weapons capability."

"We need to understand quickly whether Tehran is at last ready to negotiate seriously," it added. "Iran needs to understand that the time for diplomacy is nearing its end."

Obama prefers diplomacy. He has given Iran until sometime next spring to prove to the world that its program is peaceful.

If Iran fails to do so, the stage may be set for military intervention from the U.S. or Israel, which sees Iranian nuclear weapons capacity as an existential threat and has warned of taking action according to its own timeline.

'Sons of Anarchy' boss talks horrifying premiere

"Sons of Anarchy's" Kurt Sutter, Charlie Hunnam Katey Sagal and Paris Barclay.

Brace yourself when "Sons of Anarchy" kicks off season six next month. To say that the horrific conclusion in the premiere about a violent motorcycle club is "controversial" is one of the greatest understatements of the year.?

But that was never creator Kurt Sutter's intention, he insisted Friday at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour in Beverly Hills.

"I've wanted to do that story for about three years," he told reporters. "It's an organic story to our world ... thematically, it's the right thing. ... Nothing is done gratuitously. "?

Although the episode was screened for critics, the showrunner sincerely hopes the cataclysmic events aren't leaked before its broadcast ? but not just because spoilers will diminish its shock value.?

"I don't want it viewed as us doing it to be controversial, to bring more eyes to the episode," he said. "I'm worried more about that kind of blowback" than the public's response following its airing.

"There's not really a statement I'm trying to make within the story," Sutter said, noting that the episode's events are integral to everything that follows in the last two seasons of "Sons of Anarchy."?

"This is a story that's not being done to be sensational. It is truly the catalyst for the final act of our morality play. It sets everything in motion for this season that will ultimately lead to the end, and then will bring us into the final season and what I see as the ultimate comeuppance of everything in terms of the series."?

"I didn't want to do that and ultimately have it just be a story beat and then go away," he told TODAY.com.?

"Sons of Anarchy" returns Tuesday, Sept. 10 on FX.

Today on Radioactivity host Rob Lorei speaks with Calvina Fay, executive director of Save Our Society From Drugs and the Drug Free America Foundation. Fay is one of the leaders in the movement to stop medical marijuana from gaining acceptance across the country including next year?s effort to bring medical marijuana to Florida. A petition drive is getting underway that would put on next year?s Florida ballot a measure that would legalize medical marijuana. Fay says if this is passed Florida could see an increase in marijuana grow house activity as well as neighborhood pot shops. Listen to the full show above.

It seemed to me that you were treating her more as a caller and less as a respected interview subject. When she told you she didn?t want to answer the question about her past because she perceived that as a personal question, you should have dropped it. She was getting escalated and instead of realizing that and deescalating, you chose to push the issue. I think in retrospect you can understand that she had a legitimate reason to draw the line and instead of repeating the question you could have rephrased the question to get at the core issue of how she perceived pot smokers as a whole, as opposed to alcohol drinkers. You do treat interview subjects with a courtesy not afforded to everyday callers as you should. Now for the issues. I was part of a community of herb growers years ago. We prided ourselves on using the best organic practices for our endeavor. We never would use pesticides with the rare exception of a pepper spray but only on the leaves before the onset of bud growth ? the only part of the plant that gets smoked or eaten etc. We would never use more fertilizer than absolutely necessary because it?s not the right way to do things and because it leaves a residue in the taste which any experienced smoker will notice. Most of those in that community no longer take the risks associated with the still illegal substance. This leaves only the large scale growers who probably do it for the money and don?t take the care of the smaller scale passionate grower. Legalization would bring these dedicated growers back and ultimately have a positive effect on the community of smokers who is not ever going to disappear no matter what the lawmakers decide. As for herb smokers. Like the caller said many use pot as a way to deal with the challenges of everyday life. An after work smoke allows one to decompress and view things in a different perspective. As humans most of us are inclined to seek some kind of head change. Herb is by far the safest and least negative of the options available. This head change for many is part of a creative outlet. It allows one to gain perspective on life.

This was a good interview. You asked tough questions that she couldn't or wouldn't give answers to. I checked the website for Save Our Society, etc. and per her credentials she should have been able to give the answer to the question - does everyone who smokes MJ do it to get high? By the way I am - ahem - well over 21 and have never smoked MJ but find the drug laws draconian and believe that if someone is getting relief from pain or nausea it should be available to him/her. I once lived in a "dry township" and every year the ability to sell alcohol by the local supermarket came up on the ballot and got voted down. Since most folks I knew in that township drank (buying it in the neighboring town), I figured they went home and had a celebratory drink. Perhaps that will be what Ms. Fay will do. (that's a joke).

Oldsmar native, listening from Atlanta. Go Rob! You asked exactly the questions that need to be asked of these moral racketeers. Calvina Fay had no valid response to the ACLU findings describing the failed war on drugs, other than she herself does not "believe" them. I'm tired of policy makers pushing legislation based on anything other than facts and what works in practice. The Dream Defenders get it. Bad policy based on nothing more than moralization results in the unequal application of the law against historically marginalized groups. Often and throughout the history of this country, these policies have been pushed both by advocacy groups like that of Ms. Fay, and by more sinister lobbying entities that directly benefit from this continued subjugation. I think someone smoking pot is the lesser of these two evils.

I just put calvina fayes name into google and several videos came up with her debating others about this issue. She spouted the same talking points on these other videos. Rob took her out of her comfort zone on this issue as he should have. I don't think she used to having others take the other side of the issue as forcefully as Rob did. If you can't stand your ground and defend your position and take everything as a personal affront maybe you should find something else to do. 90 percent of the economic issues this station talks about I disagree with and I would not hang up on Rob if we had a debate about it.

I think you conducted a very good and proper interview-or at least you tried to! This woman seemed as tightly wound as a new watch from the get-go, speaking in a terse and snippy manner. She sounded as if she were talking in pre-rehearsed sound bites. She was defensive and pious. She also could not answer as to how she came by this statistic that people who smoke pot always do it to get high and drinkers don't do it to get even a "buzz" I am not a smoker, have never tried the stuff despite many chances to. I do enjoy good scotch, though! Maybe Calvina should come by for a drink at my house, I can show her the responsible way to taste and enjoy Scotland's finest. Meanwhile she should go on the ultra-conservative religious programs and share her 21st-Century version of Carrie Nation with the born-again "Christian" crowd.

There is a great article in this week's Creative Loafing about the legalization of marijuana. Florida made 57, 951 marijuana related arrests, the third most in the country. And on her mentioning weapons, dispensaries have the right to protect themselves just like any other business. She kept saying marijuana initiatives have led to more trouble than it's worth. If it's so ineffective, then why do states keep reforming their laws? Thought you had some reasonable questions to keep the argument unbiased and she just wasn't ready.

I was disappointed to learn that Calvina's org (I won't even name it here... not worth the effort) successfully got NASCAR to remove a pro-marijuana ad at the Brickyard race this past weekend. Calvina is wrong... not everyone uses pot to get high. A lot of MS patients use it as medicine, such as the lady from Palmetto. Calvina has never smoked pot and she's too scared because she's convinced the film Reefer Madness is a documentary. Bee-yach, please!!

Excellent Job Calvina! ....at making you and your organization look like a total FRAUD! Hearing you run and hide with your tail between your legs by hanging up on WMNF was hilarious. Thanks for the laughs! Next time you go on the air and take questions please make sure to read up on the topic ok? Rob

The medical uses of marijuana go beyond the relief of pain. Some of the chemical constituents of the weed have been identified as being promising in the treatment and possible curing of cancer. This is a very useful plant which can be used to produce paper, clothes, oil, renewable fuel. It can also be used in cooking. Family friend and Sarasota Herald-Tribune food writer Linda Brandt recently featured the cooking uses of hemp in her column for the paper. Suppressing this useful plant is abusing it far more than enjoying its high is.

Review: Motorola phone notable for customization

NEW YORK (AP) -- In the four decades since Motorola first showed off a prototype of the world's first cellphone, the company has watched Apple, Samsung and other innovators surpass it in sales. With Google as its new owner, Motorola is introducing the Moto X, a phone notable for innovations in manufacturing, as part of an attempt to regain its stature.

Yes, there's plenty the Moto X offers in terms of software, including the ability to get directions, seek trivia answers or set the alarm without ever touching the phone. There's good hardware, too, including a body that's nearly as slim as the iPhone 5, but with the larger, 4.7-inch screen that is comparable to those found in rival Android phones.

But what's really special about the Moto X has nothing to do with making calls, checking Facebook or holding it in your hands. Rather, it breaks from the pack by allowing for a lot of customization. You can choose everything from the color of the power button to a personalized message on the back cover.

To make those special orders possible, Motorola is assembling the Moto X in Texas, making it the first smartphone to be put together in the U.S. Motorola promises to ship custom designs within four days, faster than it would be able to if the company had chosen to make the Moto X halfway around the world in Asia, as other phones typically are. (Phones for overseas markets will be made overseas.)

You can still buy the phone the traditional way, in black or white. Walk into a store, pay about $200, sign a two-year service agreement (or installment plan with T-Mobile), and off you go with a brand new phone.

But that's boring.

Just as Apple's colorful iMacs showed more than a decade ago that personal computers don't have to be beige or black, Motorola is moving away from traditional black and white. You're still limited to black or white as your front color, but you can choose any combination of 18 back cover colors and seven "accent" colors, which highlight the power button, volume control and the rim of the camera lens. There's more coming: Motorola is testing back covers made of wood, for instance, and it plans to let people vote on Facebook on future patterns, colors and designs.

You can choose a custom message for the back of the phone ? with limits. I tried to enter profanity and trademarked names and was told, "We'd rather you not say that." You can use the space to display your email address, in case you lose the phone, for instance. In addition, you can choose one of 16 wallpapers in advance and enter your Google ID so your phone is all set up the first time you turn it on. You can select a different custom message to appear on your screen when you turn the phone on. You can even choose the color of your charger, white or black.

Choose carefully, as you won't be able to make changes after a 14-day return window. These aren't parts that you can simply pop out and swap.

With the exception of $50 more for a phone with 32 gigabytes of storage rather than 16 gigabytes, there's no cost for the customization. They will be available at about the same time the standard white and black phones come out in late August or early September. Wood back covers aren't expected until later in the year, however.

In the beginning, you can get custom versions only with AT&T as your service provider, but other carriers are coming. Standard versions will also be available through Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and U.S. Cellular at launch. You do the ordering through Motorola's Moto Maker website, which will cover service plan options with AT&T when you order the phone. If you walk into an AT&T store, you can pay for it there, just like a gift card, but you'll then have to visit the Moto Maker site and enter a scratch-off code.

So what does all this mean?

At first, I thought of it as a gimmick. But then I thought more about how phones are among our most personal possessions. Your phone contains your private thoughts in email, contact information for your loved ones and precious memories in the form of photos. So I can understand the desire to add a personal touch to the look of your phone, especially if you don't have to pay more. Keep in mind that your customizations might make the phone harder to resell when you're ready to trade up for a new model.

In many ways, it's similar to the way desktops and laptops have been sold. You can go to Dell's or Apple's website and order any number of configurations. The difference is those configurations typically have to do with the amount of storage, the speed of the processor, the size of the screen and the software that comes with the machine. With Moto X, you're getting the same storage choices that other phones offer, but all the other options are cosmetic.

Meanwhile, the Moto X advances hands-free phone use. Although hands-free options are available elsewhere to make a call or send a text, Moto X opens the door to the entire Web. It relies on Google Now, the virtual assistant that retrieves information when you speak into the phone. Normally, you press something to activate Google Now. That's how Siri works on iPhones as well. With Moto X, you simply say, "OK, Google Now."

That command is specific to your voice. I asked three colleagues to speak "OK, Google Now" into a phone I trained by repeating the phrase three times. The phone ignored my colleagues, but responded to me instantly once I spoke from the same distance. Sorry, pranksters: You won't be able use this feature to set 3 a.m. alarms on your friend's Moto X.

I was able to get the phone to recognize my command from about 10 feet away, as well as close by with an episode of "The Walking Dead" playing at full blast on a laptop inches away. But under those conditions, the service was more prone to make mistakes. For instance, the phone misheard a request for directions to Boston as "directions to fall."

Even in a quiet room, Google Now made a lot of mistakes responding to requests to call specific people. When I asked Google Now to "call Bob," it offered me "Emily," ''Dave" and "Super" ? for the superintendent of my apartment building, who's not named Bob.

I can see this feature being useful to motorists, but it's imperfect. And if you protect your phone with a PIN code, you'll need to type it in to unlock the phone, except to make a call. Motorola says it tried voice recognition for passwords, but couldn't get it to work properly.

There are two things that will work without entering your PIN: You can get a peek at text messages and other notifications by pressing the center of the screen for a second. If you want to respond or see more, then you'll need the PIN. You can also access your camera by twisting the phone like opening a doorknob. You can browse through shots you have just taken, but you'll need the PIN for older ones.

Speaking of the camera, Motorola did a good job of keeping it simple. With Samsung's Galaxy S4 and HTC's One, I've often hit the wrong buttons for gimmicky features I don't want. With the Moto X, you have to swipe the screen from the left to access the settings. That way, the buttons aren't there to hit accidently. To access your gallery of photos, you swipe from the right. Again, you won't be getting old images accidently and miss the chance to snap a new one.

The camera also lacks a shutter button. Instead, you tap anywhere on the screen to take a photo. Keep pressing on the screen, and the camera will take a series of shots in succession.

The screen measures 4.7 inches diagonally, which is larger than the iPhone 5's 4 inches and close to the 5 inches found on a few other leading phones. Held like a skyscraper, the phone is narrower than most leading Android phones. The edges are curved, but the middle is thickened more than the typical phone. That actually fits nicely in my hands, as the palm isn't flat when in a grip position. It's not heavy either, at 4.6 ounces.

Although Motorola has released other phones since Google bought the company in May 2012, the Moto X is the first to be designed under Google. It's an impressive offering that could make Motorola a contender in phones again.

About Moto X:

The Moto X is the first smartphone to be assembled in the U.S., allowing Motorola to offer a range of customization options, such as colors and personalized messages. It's available in black or white for about $200 through AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular. Other colors and options are available at no extra charge, but only with AT&T as a service provider. It's $50 more for a 32-gigabyte phone. The standard is 16 GB.

The phone has a 4.7-inch screen and two cameras capable of high-definition video at 1060p. The back camera is 10 megapixels and the front one is 2 megapixels. With a curved edge, thickness ranges from 0.22 inch on the edges to 0.41 inches in the middle. That middle part is thicker than most phones, but it's designed to fit more naturally in the curvature of your palm in grip position.

The phone goes on sale in the U.S. in late August or early September. Custom features are selected through Motorola's website, and delivery is promised within four days.

Facebook: Don't 'Like' Its Stock Price

Introduction:

After Facebook's (FB) latest quarterly report, much of the investing community has flipped sides on the long-short battle. Somehow, stronger than expected revenue and strength in mobile have changed most headlines about the company from screaming "overvalued" to preaching a growth or value opportunity. The cumulative gains chart below clearly reflects this shift in sentiment. Since its quarterly report, Facebook has gone from barely returning 12% in the past 12 months to returning over 50%.

With this article, I hope to show investors that even though Facebook is a solid company that is quickly growing and improving, its current share price is much too high to warrant a smart, long-term investment. To make my point, I will first go over some of the developments that make me like the company (ignoring its share price); let me be clear, I don't agree with some of the FB bears that simply dislike the company at most valuations. I will then present why fundamental investors should stay away at these levels, and avoid falling into the trap of buying companies that they "like".

As a Business, Facebook is Doing Great:

Facebook is on a great run as a company. For any social network that makes most of its revenue from online advertisements, three things need to continually improve in order to deem its operation a success:

  1. The number of active members needs to rise continually.
  2. The existing active members need to remain engaged.
  3. The success of monetization should be steadily rising.

Facebook is succeeding at all three; I will explain this success without going into too much detail by using a few charts.

1. The number of active users is constantly increasing:

Facebook is becoming more global, and its size reflects that, with numbers booming in countries like India and Brazil.

2. Contrary to what many bears preach, existing Facebook users' engagement is increasing:

This trend is especially impressive when you consider the fact that most new users come from outside North America and Europe, where user engagement levels are lower, which should be putting downward pressure on daily active users as a % of monthly active users.

3. Success in monetization is on the rise too, with increasing ARPU:

While the chart above shows weak improvement in overall ARPU, this is due to most of Facebook's new users coming from countries with lower ARPU figures, which puts downward pressure on the overall average. A more accurate way to look at the improvement in ARPU is by looking at each region separately, as done below.

Again, overall, Facebook's core business is doing great, and is improving at a fast rate. However, this does not necessarily justify a $50B+ valuation.

Facebook Is Fundamentally Overvalued

It is very difficult to model a growth company like Facebook, so no valuation can be considered the most accurate. However, my main issue with Facebook comes from the fact that no matter what you decide to use as your inputs, it is extremely hard to justify its current valuation. Considering the fact that an investment would warrant the potential for at least a 15% upside in the next year to pay for the risk, this is an issue.

Below you can see some of the revenue assumptions in my valuation model. Many will disagree with my projections, and all I can say is try it yourself (you can download a valuation model here, coupon code "seekingalpha") and you will be surprised at how hard it is to justify Facebook's current valuation.

Below are the resulting revenue projections:

I consider these results to be optimistic, with an average yearly revenue growth of 26% over the next 10 years.

In the end we get to a valuation:

For my model specifically, I end up at about $16/share, though I do not think that Facebook will trade that low anytime soon. The result is just what the fundamentals show me when growing Facebook's current business at a fast rate, but without taking into account complete surprises like significant new ventures. More interestingly, this valuation graph shows us why Facebook may have such a high valuation:

As you can see, the DCF analysis strongly suggests that Facebook is overvalued. After all, a 6-7% terminal growth rate from 2022 onwards is a very optimistic projection. Interestingly, the public company comparables show a trend of high valuations for companies like Facebook. While the median multiples give a share price between $10 and $22, the multiples from the 75th percentile to the maximum give disproportionately higher share prices. This could indicate that Facebook's overvaluation is in part symptom of the overall overvaluation of social media/tech/online companies, which is another reason to stay away from this stock.

Conclusion:

To conclude, Facebook is fundamentally overvalued, in part because of over optimism on growth, and in part because of the wider issue of overvaluation of companies of its kind. A long-term fundamental investor should not be tricked by the health of Facebook's fast-growing business, and should stick to the proven rules of ensuring margin of safety and of fundamentals-based valuation. I would discourage any long-term investor from buying at a price significantly above $20/share, unless new developments emerge that completely change the company's long-term potential, though even optimistic projections of new revenue streams and booming segments barely raise my valuation above $16-18/share. I encourage anyone interested in Facebook's stock to download their own valuation models to modify and adjust to their own projections (you can download them here, use the coupon code "seekingalpha" for a 50% discount).

Overall, those that have profited from the recent rise in share price should sell, and others should strongly consider shorting the stock. While shorts should be very careful, as we have been shown many times that these kinds of runs can continue for long periods of time, most methods of valuation show that even very positive new developments will not be enough to support this share price in the long run.

Stock price at time of writing: $37.69

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article. (More...)
