Eccentric Gambia leader poised to win another term (AP)

JOHANNESBURG ? Gambia's president of 17 years is widely expected to win another term in Thursday's election with the opposition divided and voters apathetic.

President Yahya Jammeh, who has drawn international attention for his claims that he can cure AIDS, faces two opposition candidates.

On Wednesday, the West African regional bloc ECOWAS said it believed the vote would not be free and fair. International observer missions from the African Union and European Union will be overseeing the polls.

Gambia's president already has removed term limits from the constitution, and has told his supporters that neither an election nor a coup can shake his grip on power.

The president's supporters credit him with developing infrastructure across this tiny country located on Africa's western coast.
