Best and Worst Holiday Foods - Jamy's Blog

The holidays are a time when the whole family gets together to exchange gifts, to celebrate, and the most important thing, to eat. During the holidays, eating good food is a must, and most people eat over 600 more calories than their regular diet. That?s because it can be hard to resist Mom?s homemade apple pie,buy rappelz rupees, Aunt Debbie?s famous hors d?oeuvre platter, or Cousin Jimmy?s secret ingredient chili.

Most of us really should be trying to avoid these types of food, but we pull the ?it?s the holidays? card to cover up our appetite. But, instead of gorging yourself with the some of the unhealthiest foods available, a few easy adjustments can be made to satisfy your holiday hunger without going up in clothes sizes.

The first thing we go for during the holidays is usually the drinks. Eggnog is the holiday drink favorite, and most of us don?t know that we are usually consuming around 350 calories, 19 grams of fat, and 22 grams of sugars in one glass. And that?s not including the alcohol. A good replacement beverage for the holidays is hot chocolate. This drink only totes 120 calories, 4 grams of fat, 15 grams of sugars, and is not short on the tasty side.

Gin and tonic is another holiday drink favorite for the adults, but in just an 8-ounce serving, this beverage has some very unhealthy qualities. In that small serving, you get a whopping 220 calories and more than 20 grams of sugar. A suggestion for people trying not to gain 20 pounds by January 1st would be to pick up a glass of champagne that only packs 100 calories and a fraction of the sugars.

Appetizers and hors d?oeuvres can also be heavy-hitters when it comes to foods that add the weight. They may seem innocent in their small form factor, but some of the ingredients used to make them can boost calorie and fat levels. One to look out for is spinach artichoke cheese-dip.

This ?beginner? usually contains a little below 300 calories and 17-20 grams of fat. For healthier appetizers, choose fruits, vegetables, and light cheeses from the platters. Shrimp cocktail is also another healthy and delicious substitute, because they are very low in calories and low maintenance.

One of the worst holiday desserts, and foods, you can eat is pecan pie. Holding about 800 calories per slice, 65 grams of fat, and 50 grams of sugar this will definitely help pack on the holiday pounds. And that doesn?t even include the ice creams and other toppings that can go on top of the nut topped sugary syrup filling.

A lighter and healthier substitute is chocolate fondue. Dipping fresh fruits or even cubes of low-fat and low-calorie angel food cake in some melted unsweetened chocolate can make a fun and delicious holiday treat that the whole family can enjoy.

It?s okay to enjoy your eating experience during the holidays with some of your family?s famous dishes, but keep your health and weight in mind. A lot of people make New Year?s resolutions, and if your resolution is to be healthier or to lose weight, you wouldn?t want to add anymore weight to want you want to lose the next year.
