Beyonce Tribute to Michael Jackson: Remembering the King of Pop, Pure Swag

Michael Jackson died June 25, 2009, or three years ago this week. In a touching tribute to MJ, Beyonce remembers the artist who changed her life forever.

The "Crazy in Love" singer and new mom wrote a touching message on her website about Jackson on Monday, Michael Jackson's death anniversary.

Beyonce, 30, said her first producer had her listen MJ's "Who's Loving You" on repeat. "What he wanted me to learn was his soul," the star recalls.

"You could hear his soul. It's something that's God given."

Beyonce and Michael Jackson

"For whatever reason he could evoke more emotion than an adult," she went on. "It was these little things he did that were pure swag."

And the mother of Blue Ivy Carter and wife of rapper Jay-Z credits the King of Pop for teaching her that "sometimes you have to forget technique."

"Michael Jackson changed me forever, and helped me to become the artist I am," Beyonce writes, adding simply "Thank you Michael."

Jackson died on June 25, 2009 from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol, given to him by Dr. Conrad Murray. He was only 50 years old.

Teacher dies trying to save student in Lake Erie

By msnbc.com staff

CLEVELAND -- An Ohio teacher who died after trying to save a 9-year-old student from Lake Erie rip currents is being remembered for her selflessness as investigators try to determine why children on a school beach outing were in the water before lifeguards were on duty.

Laura Recco, 46, of Seven Hills dove into the water about 10:30 a.m. Monday when she saw two students, including Diamond Harris, 9, being pulled under at Bay Village?s Huntington Beach, about 10 miles west of Cleveland, according to reports.

Recco pulled one student out but when she went back for Harris, currents and waves up to 6 feet pulled her under, too, the Morning Journal newspaper of Lorain reported.

"The way she died is the perfect display of how selfless she was," Angelica Gagliardi, the older of Recco?s two daughters, tearfully told WEWS of Cleveland.

Although Cleveland Metroparks lifeguards weren?t due on duty until 11 a.m., Christian Pesarchick, 19, of Avon Lake was setting up and jumped in to try to save Recco and Harris, but he got into trouble in the water, too, NBC station WKYC of Cleveland reported.

About a half-dozen other lifeguards and passerby Clint Kranes, an Elyria resident and Navy veteran, and another teacher eventually pulled all three out of the water, WKYC reported.

The three were sent to St. John Medical Center. Pesarchick was released Monday. Harris was transferred to Rainbow Babies and Children?s Hospital and was released Tuesday, the Morning Journal newspaper of Lorain reported.

Recco died Wednesday morning, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner?s Office said.

She was one of four teachers who came with Harris and four other students on the annual?beach outing for the private nonprofit Positive Education Program, which serves 2,500 Cleveland-area children with special learning needs, WKYC reported.

Why some children and adults ventured into the water before the beach was officially open?and with dangerous conditions on the lake is being investigated by both Metroparks Rangers and by the Positive Education Program, WKYC reported.

Gagliardi described her mother to the Morning Journal:??Best teacher. Best mother. Best grandmother. Best friend. None of those things even touch the surface of the woman my mom was and the woman my mom raised me to become. She was strong and respected and put everyone else before herself.?

PEP would not comment to msnbc.com or other news organizations.

On Wednesday it issued a statement: ?Laura was one of our very finest teachers. Uniquely skilled at helping children build competencies, she was committed to helping every child know some joy in each day. She was deeply respected by her peers and was honored as PEP Hopewell?s Teacher-Counselor of the Year in 2006.?

The?veteran teacher also leaves behind her husband, Frank.

Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 updated to Windows Phone 75, finally get to Tango

We'd heard that the Lumia 800 and 710 were to get Windows Phone 7.5 sometime soon, but the time has officially arrived for these two to Tango. Today Nokia announced that the fresh code has already started rolling out, bringing hotspot and flip-to-silence functionality to the handsets. Plus, once you've updated via your Zune desktop software, access to the nifty Camera Extras software -- already promised to Lumia 900 owners -- is but a download away. As a refresher, those Extras allow Lumias to take Scalado-powered Smart Group Shots, provide a better burst mode for action pics, plus add a self-timer and panorama mode as well. Want to see the new camera features in action before taking the plunge? Check out the video after the break.

Update: As our astute commenters have pointed out, the Lumias both have Mango onboard, so this bit of software is but an update to Windows Phone 7.5 that brings additional features.

Developing a Multi Channel Customer Service Roadmap

Hi Doc Wallace here. Over the last few weeks we have talked about the changes and challenges affecting the customer service and contact centre industries.? We have talked about the impact that social media will have as a customer service channel on contact centres.? We have also presented compelling evidence supporting the need for organisations to adopt a multi-channel customer service strategy, whereby organisations effectively engage with customers through channels the customer wants to use.

?

In this final webinar I presented a methodology for developing a full multi channel customer service strategy.

?

We know from research that consumers are using multiple channels to engage with organizations.? In Canada and the US, customers have used an average of 3.5 different service channels in a three month period.? However, are they the right channels you need to be leveraging to offer your customer?s superior service?

?

During the webinar we presented a very compelling story as to why organizations need to develop multi channel customer service strategies.? Firstly, we highlighted that not all customer service channels are created equal in that customers do not currently receive the same level of service across each channel.? First contact query resolution rates in particular vary considerably across different channels.

?

1st Contact Query Resolution

Untitled.png

?

?

A further study conducted by Fifth Quadrant highlighted that organizations that are rated as having a mature enterprise-wide customer service strategy are significantly more likely to have implemented a multi-channel strategy that includes Social Networks, Social Network, Remote Assist, Online Forums, Web Chat, Click to Call and Mobile Apps as customer service channels.

?

Developing a multi-channel customer service strategy can be a complex challenge as channel choice can be influenced by many factors such as demographic characteristics, query type, the type of industry, consumer attitudes towards technology and so on.? What organizations need is a systematic framework and process to work through in order to deliver the most effective multi channel customer service strategy.

?

When developing an enterprise-wide customer service strategy have the following points top of mind:

?

  1. It must support the overarching strategic goals for the business
  2. Must be Customer-driven in design
  3. Must meet cost or ROI imperatives
  4. Should have the capability to deliver social and mobile channels
  5. Technology must be an enabler and not the architecture of the strategy
  6. HR designing and planning is as difficult and as important as process and technology design
  7. Integration of channels is key
  8. Knowledge management and analytics are the backbone to good strategy
  9. Measurement and reporting is essential.

?

The development of an integrated multi channel customer service strategy should result in the following business outcomes:

?

  1. Increased customer engagement, advocacy and loyalty
  2. Increased revenue generation
  3. Increased efficiencies
  4. Increased competitive advantage through service delivery.

?

Embarking on a true multi-channel service strategy is a complex and involved process. If it is conducted however, from a strategic framework, the chance of success is very high. If approached as an operational plan the risk of failure is high, as demonstrated by many organizations.

The first organizations to approach service in this strategic and integrated manner will have a considerable competitive advantage.

In case you missed the webinar a presentation from the session and the recording are now available for you to download.

NHL labor negotiations about to begin

(AP) ? The head of the NHL players' union said Monday that negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement will begin "very quickly" ? perhaps as early as this week ? and didn't rule out talks stretching into the season.

New NHL Players Association executive director Donald Fehr said negotiations will begin after Wednesday's meeting of the NHLPA's executive board, though he did not specify a date. He was in Chicago for three days of union talks.

The NHL canceled the 2004-05 season before a labor deal was reached that included a salary cap for the first time. That agreement expires on Sept. 15.

Fehr was asked whether a work stoppage was inevitable.

"None of that is coming from our side," he said. "That's the first thing. Secondly, we have not made a proposal. We haven't heard an owners' proposal."

He also shrugged off concerns about having a deal in place by the time the season begins.

"There's nothing magic about Sept. 15. The law is that if you don't have a new agreement, and as long as both sides are willing to keep negotiating, you can continue to play under the terms of the old one until you reach an agreement," he said.

Asked if that could happen in this instance, Fehr said, "All I know is that in baseball, there were any number of occasions in which we played while the parties were continuing to negotiate."

A work stoppage, he said, would be a "last resort."

"The problem that we've had in the salary-cap sports going back 20-plus years now is that in many instances, historically ? I'm not saying it'll be true this time ? a lockout has been the negotiation strategy of choice," Fehr added. "It's unfortunate because it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Hopefully, that's not going to be true this time."

The league declined comment.

Fehr said he expected 40 to 60 players to attend the meetings, and some of the game's biggest stars were in attendance on Monday, including Washington's Alex Ovechkin and Chicago's Jonathan Toews.

"I think everybody has to be involved," Ovechkin said. "It's our lives."

Toews said, "I think it's important for all of us."

He called it a "learning process," particularly for players who were not around for the lockout, and he senses an urgency to reach an agreement.

"I don't see why not," he said. "That's obviously what everyone wants."

Commissioner Gary Bettman said during the Stanley Cup finals last month that he believes the labor scene is different this time around. One big change is that the players are now being led by Fehr, the former head of the powerful baseball union.

Fehr is working with a group that was in disarray following the lockout and went through several changes in leadership including a scandal that led to the demise of former executive director Ted Saskin, who was accused of ordering spying of player e-mail.

Fehr was brought in as an adviser before becoming the union's head about a year and a half ago. He has since spent time catching up on hockey and his members' needs. He has been having informal discussions with Bettman for some time.

"From our standpoint, the starting place is the players made enormous concessions the last time around," Fehr said. "The second item that comes to mind is the game generates a lot more revenue than it did before. And you put those two things together, it ought to point you in the direction as to where this negotiation should go."

Bettman said last month that the league had record revenues in excess of $3.1 billion, but he refused to say how much of that was profit. How to divide the revenue is a huge issue, with owners wanting to cut the players' share from 57 percent.

"We want to keep it where it is and they want to probably bring it down," Phoenix's Shane Doan said. "I understand that's the way it is. ... Everybody wants more. I'm sure they do, too. It's part of labor. That's the way it is."

How deep the sides dig in could go a long way toward determining whether the NHL becomes the third major sports league in the past two years to go through a work stoppage. The NBA played a shortened season with a condensed schedule after a labor dispute pushed the start of the season back to late December, and the NFL went through a lockout that wiped out most of the offseason training program a year ago and delayed training camp.

Fehr is already showing signs he won't be a pushover.

The union scuttled the NHL's plans to realign and switch from two three-division conferences to four seven- or eight-team conferences in January, because it was not consulted.

Another issue is the Olympics.

The players want to compete. Bettman has long made it clear that he doesn't see the benefit in it for the league, even though it provides many players to the Olympics right in the midst of the NHL season.

For now, the league wasn't conceding that a stoppage is inevitable.

"I don't know if it's inevitable," Doan said. "That threat's there. That's what's going to get everything done. Everything tends to go to the deadline of what's going to cost people the most. We'll just have to deal with that."

Notes: Toews said he's no longer experiencing any symptoms after missing the final 22 regular-season games because of a concussion. "I'm feeling great," he said. He also said he texted teammate Patrick Kane after photos of the young star partying in Madison, Wis., surfaced on the Internet after the season. He was also arrested in his hometown of Buffalo, N.Y., three years ago after an altercation with a cab driver. "People want to get to know him off the ice, see what he's like, and the next thing you know he's under a microscope," Toews said. "There's a lot of 23-, 24-year-old kids out there having a great time, and they don't have to worry about that sort of thing. He does. It's tough. I know it's tough on him. ... His teammates support him. Bringing him back to focusing on hockey, that's the main thing we want him to do."

Smartphone apps scan moles for skin cancer, check blood pressure ...

Three tries. More than two years. And roughly $150,000.

That?s what it took for MIM Software to get the Food and Drug Administration?s clearance for a smartphone application that physicians can use to view MRIs and other medical images.

?It was 2008 when we first tried,? said Mark Cain, the Ohio firm?s chief technology officer. ?They didn?t know what questions to ask and neither did we. . . . But at some point, they had to be thinking, ?How many more people will be lined up behind these guys?? ?

His was, in fact, among the first apps cleared by the FDA. And since then, medical applications have flooded on to millions of smartphones, offering consumers the chance to check their heart rate, identify a pill in their medicine cabinet or even scan moles for skin cancer. Soon, if a firm called AliveCor gets its way, they may even be able to get an EKG by pressing iPhone to chest.

The gee-whiz factor can both astonish and alarm.

A defect in apps that essentially turn your phone or tablet into a medical device could prove problematic or even life-threatening: The app may not work as it should. For instance, what if lighting or contrast issues distort an X-ray that?s viewed on an iPhone or iPad?

That?s why federal regulators lurched into action a year ago, offering their thinking on how to police this vast new frontier. Just as they were putting the finishing touches on a plan, lawmakers intervened. The Senate moved to put the plan on hold after tech firms convinced lawmakers that more government oversight would stifle innovation and cost jobs.

Last week, Congress gave the FDA the green light to proceed with a push to define exactly which apps require government attention. But lawmakers also ordered the Obama administration to come up with a strategy that balances public interest with innovation in the years to come. The task is daunting, given the warp speed of technology.

It?s a classic showdown between Washington regulators charged with safeguarding the public?s health and a free-wheeling tech industry that prizes agility and first-to-market bragging rights.

?There are two completely different mind-sets,? said Merrill Matthews, a resident scholar at the Innovative Policy Institute. ?The app people think: Where is there a need and how do I fill it? And the FDA thinks: Where is there a problem and how can I control it??

Mobile apps, with their extraordinary reach, have the power to transform health care. Half of cellphone users in the United States have smartphones such as the iPhone or Android software-based devices, which can deliver care to their hands and potentially do so at a lower cost. Using smartphones and wireless tablets as diagnostic tools or monitoring devices could also cut back on emergency room visits.

For software developers, especially cash-strapped start-ups, there?s an enormous amount riding on whether the FDA steps up enforcement ? and exactly how it plans to do it, industry analysts said.

?The FDA approval process adds months, if not years, and potentially millions of dollars to what it takes to bring a solution to the market,? said Liz Boehm, a director at ExperiaHealth, a consulting firm. ?That development process would put many of these guys out of business.?

Medical apps exploded onto the scene in 2010 and have grown by about 150 percent each year since, according to MobiHealth News, which tracks Apple?s iTunes store, where many apps debut. Consumers can choose about 13,000 of these apps; 5,000 more are marketed to medical professionals.

The offerings range from very basic ? and free ? apps that calculate body mass index to more sophisticated ones that make use of pricey supplemental devices. The pharmaceutical firm Sanofi has an app for diabetics that registers glucose levels with the help of a meter that attaches to iPhones. IHealth offers an app that records blood pressure using a cuff that plugs into an iPhone, and WiThing has one that tracks weight and body-fat percentage using the company?s WiFi-enabled scale.

A survey by the Pew Internet Project found that 11 percent of adults with cellphones downloaded an app last year to help them manage their health. That same year, the mobile health-apps industry generated an estimated $718 million worldwide, seven times more than the previous year, according to Research2Guidance, a consulting firm.

While the FDA currently regulates certain medical software, the agency wants to update its thinking now that smartphones have juiced the apps market.

A year ago, the agency proposed policing only a subset of those apps: ones that use supplemental attachments to transform a mobile platform into a medical device (such as AliveCor?s EKG app) and others that act as accessories to an already regulated medical device (such as MIM Software?s app).

Rather than overseeing all medical apps, agency officials said they want to limit regulation to a slice of the market and take a pass on low-risk apps, such as calorie counters, according to Bakul Patel, an FDA policy adviser.

?We are taking a proactive step by saying that from the FDA perspective,? Patel said. ?We?re not concerned about all those other apps.?

Software makers, on the other hand, see an agency that currently regulates next to nothing in the mobile apps space taking a sudden interest in regulating more. The FDA proposal, they say, is vague and leaves many questions unanswered. For instance, given that apps can be updated daily, does a software developer have to seek FDA approval for each update?

Among the critics is a group called the Health IT Now Coalition. It represents health-care providers, patient advocates and health insurance companies, including Aetna, which last year bought iTriage ? an app that helps consumers evaluate medical symptoms and find the proper care.

?The issue here is that they?re really using a process for approval of these mobile apps that was basically created when the 5 ?-inch floppy disk was the latest technology,? said Joel White, the group?s executive director.

Dirk Hobbs, chief executive of Medical Voyce Sciences and Multimedia, said the FDA?s plan is ambiguous and he doesn?t know whether the apps his firm is developing would be regulated. The apps aim to speed communication among medical professionals in different facilities.

?This is just going to slam the brakes on an innovative sector that includes tons of small businesses like mine,? said Hobbs, who expressed his concerns to Sen. Michael F. Bennet, D-Colo.

Bennet and Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, R-Utah, wrote a provision, inserted in a broader FDA funding bill, that would have delayed the FDA proposal by forcing the agency to first reach agreement with other regulators about how to handle these apps.

This week, in a compromise reached by House and Senate lawmakers, Congress allowed the FDA to press ahead. But it also directed the agency to work on a report with other regulators that would lay out an appropriate framework to promote innovation and protect patient safety.

Former FDA deputy commissioner Scott Gottlieb, who researches medical trends as a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, said he?s disappointed. If consumers can track their blood-sugar levels using pen and paper, he said, why should the government have to clear an app that does the same thing more reliably?

Gottlieb said that software developers should be suspicious because regulators have a tendency to tighten their grip on industries as they develop. ?If they perceive a power vacuum,? he said, ?they?ll step in and regulate more and more.?

Some in the tech industry do not perceive a threat. They say they?ve been expecting the FDA to regulate some apps and are eager for the agency to reveal which ones.

A group called the mHealth Regulatory Coalition ? which represents established firms such as Qualcomm as well as start-up software developers ? was formed in 2010 to deal with mobile health care regulatory issues. Its leaders argue that uncertainty breeds anxiety and drives away potential investors.

?We started telling the FDA that they?re going to stifle innovation if they don?t start clarifying where the lines will be drawn,? said Bradley Thompson, the group?s general counsel. Other technology groups ? including the West Wireless Health Institute and the Application Developers Alliance ? have taken a similar position.

In a recent meeting with industry representatives, Jeffrey E. Shuren, head of the FDA?s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, assured the group that the final plan would include more details than the draft, some attendees said. The agency may even create a Web site with generic examples of apps that would be exempt, Shuren told them.

In the end, the FDA?s plan may indeed sink some software makers whose products can?t withstand federal scrutiny, said Lisa Suennen, co-founder of Psilos Group, a health-care-focused venture capital firm.

?But while regulation puts an extra burden on young companies, those that can get through it will have a huge competitive advantage,? Suennen said. ?You can?t have every Tom, Dick and Harry claiming that their medical app adds value without having to prove it.?

Spokane Mayor David Condon is already building a campaign chest for a race in which he faces no opponent ? at least not?yet.

Condon said at a news conference earlier this month that he intends to run for re-election in?2015.

?I?ve got 36 months left, folks,? Condon said June 1. ?From today, I?ve got three years to prove to the citizens that I?ve done what they?ve wanted me to?do.?

Condon already employs a part-time campaign manager. He mailed a request for money to supporters in April that warned of ?special interest groups? blocking change at City Hall, and he is holding a barbecue fundraiser this?week.

His early re-election efforts are a departure from past mayors, who generally didn?t start significant fundraising efforts or maintain paid campaign staff until much closer to Election?Day.

The strategy of previous incumbents hasn?t proven fruitful. No Spokane mayor has won a second term since David Rodgers nearly 40 years?ago.

Condon already has raised about $25,000 and spent nearly $10,000 on his 2015?campaign.

?The mayor wants to maintain contact with supporters,? said Condon?s campaign manager Tyler Whitney. ?He also wanted to maintain contact through his campaign?tools.?

On Wednesday, Condon?s campaign will earn $40 per person or $320 per table at a barbecue at the home of Myrtle Woldson, a businesswoman and philanthropist who lives near the mayor and contributed to his campaign last?year.

Some of Condon?s fundraising techniques are similar to those of his former boss, U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Spokane. His campaign kickoff brunch last year was a breakfast at the downtown Doubletree Hotel. Businesses or other contributors could sponsor tables, and attendees were hit up for more money after a video and a speech. McMorris Rodgers used the same format at her re-election campaign kickoff in the same hotel ballroom this?year.

Condon served as McMorris Rodgers? district director until he became a candidate for?mayor.

In April, Condon mailed a letter coinciding with his first 100 days in office, outlining his?accomplishments.

?Not everyone acknowledges our progress,? said the letter. ?After a commanding win in November, naysayers are already attacking our accomplishments. The special interest groups do not want to see change at City Hall. It is imperative that I have the resources to counter these?attacks.?

Spokane City Council President Ben Stuckart said he is unsure what ?special interest groups? Condon is referring?to.

?I definitely have not seen an organized effort to discredit the mayor?s accomplishment thus far,? Stuckart?said.

Whitney said Condon wasn?t referring to city unions or any specific person or?group.

The line ?served as a reminder that even while making great progress, there will always be mudslingers like Ms. Riordan who would rather try to score cheap political points than pick up a shovel and help Spokane move forward,? Whitney wrote in an?email.

The ?Ms. Riordan? he?s referring to is Tanya Riordan, who worked last year for the liberal activist group Fuse Washington and filed a complaint against Condon?s campaign with the state Public Disclosure Commission before Condon?s?election.

Commission staff members examined the complaint this month and determined that it deserved further investigation. PDC spokeswoman Lori Anderson said it will be assigned to a staff member, a report will be written and the commission will make the final call about possible violations. The maximum penalty the commission can issue is a $4,200?fine.

?Riordan?s complaint stems from donations the state Republican Party made to Condon?s campaign. Within three days last October, the party received five contributions totaling $25,000 from Spokane County businesses and residents. The donations were directed to a fund set up to aid candidates in municipal and county races; the fund received no other contributions from Spokane County sources in?October.

Two weeks after the money came in, on Oct. 27, the state GOP gave David Condon?$25,000.

Two of the five contributors were companies owned by Condon?s brother, Ted Condon. Four of the five, including one of the companies owned by his brother, had already given the maximum amount allowed to Condon?s?campaign.

State law bars parties from promising donors that their contributions will go to certain campaigns, a practice known as??earmarking.?

Condon and state party leaders say no promises were made and that earmarking did not?occur.

?This is a zombie complaint,? Whitney said. ?It should have died with the?campaign.?

Sharon Smith, the chairwoman of the Inland Northwest Leadership Political Action Committee, said Riordan filed the complaint because the contributions ?looked to us like outside the bounds of a miracle?incident.?

Smith?s PAC supported ex-mayor Mary Verner in the 2011?election.

?That?s all we wanted, was for them to take a look at it,? Smith?said.

After Riordan?s complaint was filed, the party contributed another $38,000 to Condon?s?campaign.

Condon raised $318,000 for his 2011 campaign, the most ever raised by a candidate for Spokane mayor, at least since the city?s form of government switched to a strong mayor system in the 2000 election. Condon?s opponent, Verner, only raised about $126,000. The most previously raised by a candidate for Spokane mayor in the strong mayor era was John Powers in 2000. He raised about?$290,000.

Stuckart, who is the only nonjudicial Spokane city official who is elected citywide beside Condon, said he wouldn?t rule out running for mayor in 2015 when asked last?week.

?In my world I haven?t yet had the time to say, ?What am I going to be doing in 2015 and let?s start planning for it,? Stuckart said. ?We?ll approach that subject in?2014.?

Kobo eReader Touch Edition packs bags for Japan, books flight for July

Rakuten's $315 million buyout of Kobo will bear some e-reader fruit come July. The e-tailer's CEO and chairman, Hiroshi Mikitani, announced plans to release the Kobo eReader Touch Edition in Japan next month for 10,000 yen (on par with its $130 US sticker price). Timing is key, of course -- murmurs of the Kindle Touch's Japanese debut haven't escaped Mikitani's notice. "As a Japanese company, we cannot lose (to overseas rivals)," he told The Asahi Shimbun. Rakuten hopes to use the e-reader to export Japanese content, and aims to have 50,000 titles available by the end of 2012. Pre-orders kick off on July 2, with more details to come next month.

Mirror Mirror: Examining Nature?s Copy and Paste

Twins Derek and Zachary Francis sit across from each other in Caffe Luce, a popular coffee shop near the University of Arizona campus. Their faces, still showing signs of youthful hormones, are nearly identical. Their hairstyles, their fashion styles and even their mannerisms are almost mirror images.

Derek, the older brother, has a wider jaw and short hair. A red string adorns his left wrist as he writes left-handed. Zachary, with his short hair coifed similar to his brother?s and a small birthmark behind his neck, is more reserved, listening to headphones while he scrolls through his computer with his right hand.

The brothers have spent 99 percent of their 19 years of life at each other?s side. They also share an even rarer bond than your typical identical twin: The Francis twins are also mirror-image twins.

Mirror-image twins is an unofficial phenomenon that occurs among identical twins almost 25 percent of the time, according to Dr. Nancy Segal, a psychologist and director of the Twin Studies Center at California State University, Fullerton. In these cases, each twin exhibits a trait that?s the opposite of the other twin?s. One might be left-handed, the other right-handed. Or one has freckles on the left check, but the other has it on the right. In rare cases, brain structures and areas of expression in diseases like cancer when a co-twin develops a similar cancer on the right lung as their sibling who has had it on the left.

Mirror-image twin is not a recognized designation for identical twins. ?It?s a misnomer because only some traits are mirrored,? Segal said. Segal, who is a ?fraternal? co-twin, a term used on members of twin pairs, has been working with twins since her graduate studies back in the late 1980s. In fact, she is one of the world?s foremost researchers on twins. Her latest book on twins raised apart, Born Together ? Reared Apart, which was released earlier this summer, examines a case of twins who did not meet each other until they were adults but shared traits including tension headaches, bit fingernails, smoked Salems and even vacationed on the same Florida beach.

Segal calls mirror-image twins a ?messy group? in terms of research because they don?t have uniformly mirrored traits that make research reproducible. Because of this, conflict has arisen over the mechanics of twindom and some of the results of studies.

Zach and Derek Francis exhibit mirroring traits in their handedness, the part and whorl of their hair growth and even their overbites when they were children. ?Zach was in a check-up at the orthodontist, and they found out he had an overbite to the right side of his mouth,? said Penelope Francis, the twins? mother. ?I told the doctor that Derek must have one to the left.?

At first the doctor laughed. When he asked why Francis would assume that, she explained the boys? mirror-image traits.

And she was right about the overbite.

Copy, Paste: A Challenge to Twin Types

Not everyone, however, believes in the mythology about twins ? or even the terminology. ?There?s no such things as identical twins,? said Dr. Charles Boklage, a behavioral and developmental genetics researcher at East Carolina University and the father of twin girls. ?No two people are identical.?

?Monozygotic is what people mean,? Boklage continued, insisting on the terms ?monozygotic? and ?dizygotic? when referring to twins.

In layman?s terminology, ?monozygotic? means that a single fertilized egg split to create two babies. ?Dizygotic? means that two fertilizations occurred, resulting in two siblings who happen to be born at roughly the same time.

In the case of ?dizygotic? versus ?fraternal,? Boklage simply said that ?fraternal? means ?brother.? Twins classified as ?fraternal,? however, have also been females or have at least one female in the pairing.

Boklage, whose claims dash many myths associated with twin lore including handedness, shared traits, and even the time when twins are formed at conception. He said there?s a lack of scientific proof explaining why mirror imaging happens. He argued that the idea first appeared after an experiment in the 1920s by Hans Spemann, a professor at the University of Freiburg and later Nobel Laureate in developmental biology for his work on embryogenesis.

In this experiment, newt embryos were successfully induced to split when Spemann pinched a single embryo into a dumbbell shape using a child?s hair. As a result, the normal asymmetry of the new organisms? internal organs was reversed, Boklage said. Spemann did not entirely pinch the embryos in half because this would have killed the embryo.

?Mirror-imaging between twins is real, and it almost certainly means something important about embryogenesis,? Boklage wrote in his book How New Humans Are Made. ?But, any such relationship is entirely accidental and meaningless in this context, the context in which it is most often discussed.?

Boklage wrote that handedness, a trait common among mirror twins, ?is not representative of most instances of the phenomenon and is therefore very much the wrong place to look for it.?

In his research Boklage claimed that the frequency of left-handedness is only slightly higher than among single-born siblings. This trait, he contended, was inherited from parents rather than caused by special splitting at the embryonic level.

?In fact,? Boklage wrote, ?in most samples collected and studied to date, dizygotic co-twins are, clearly and consistently, considerably more likely to differ in handedness (that is, to ?be mirror-image twins?) than monozygotic co-twins.?

Although Boklage acknowledged that the phenomenon happens, he doesn?t believe it is as prominent as what is often cited in popular literature available on the Web. ?I can find no source for that 25 percent number in the scientific literature,? Boklage wrote in his book. ?I believe it has to be a wild arm-waving guess that has been passed along because it is nice to have a number and nobody can readily provide a reference to any evidence that can show that this suggested number is wrong.?

Boklage?s arguments seem to agree with Penelope Francis, who insisted that her sons Derek and Zach are fraternal ? or dizygotic ? twins and not identical. Francis said the doctors told her the boys came in ?two different sacs.?

?Mothers are the worst judges of twindom because they are around the twins all the time,? Segal said, ?while strangers are rarely around the twins and so can judge them better.?

Segal, who is a contributing editor to the journal Twin Research and Human Genetics, wrote in a December 2010 article: ?[A]bout a third of identical twins were born in separate placentas, amnions (inner fetal membranes) and chorions (outer fetal membranes).? In the article she mentioned the case of the parents who were misinformed about the type of twins their daughters were ? a mistake that seems to be made often about the sacs in which twins are born.

Segal also disagreed with Boklage?s claims about the lack of scientific evidence for the frequency of mirror-image twins. She cited her own work and a book by Sally P. Springer called Left Brain, Right Brain as sources for the 25 percent figure that?s commonly associated with the frequency of mirror-image twins.

?It is well known among scientists that monozygotic (identical) twins can differ across virtually every behavioral and physical trait,? Segal wrote, ?including intelligence, personality, height and weight.?

Mirror-image twins Julie and Marie Fleming, 17, from Tucson, are tall, athletic and outgoing teens with a penchant for slight mischief, such as switching places in some of their high school classes. Much like the Francis twins, the Fleming girls differ in height and weight, albeit slightly, and abilities. The girls share similar interests in writing but excel in different sports. Julie is better at volleyball, Marie at basketball.

The girls also exhibit the handedness trait and mirror their eyesight ? the prescriptions for the girls? eyes are mirrored in the other, they said.

Seeing Double

In early April twin researchers from all over the world gathered at the Joint 2nd World Congress on Twin Pregnancy and the 14th Congress of the International Society of Twin Studies in Florence, Italy. The scientists presented work that was going in several directions, Segal said.

Some western countries have shown a growing frequency in twin birth, Segal said. In the United States alone, twinning rates rose by 76 percent between 1980 and 2009. In 2009, one in every 30 infants born was a twin, according to a brief issued in January 2012 by the National Center for Health Statistics at the CDC.

Now, researchers are looking at twins for epigenetics, looking for specific genes for specific diseases. Twins are perfect candidates for this research because researchers can examine which genes are expressed or not expressed among the twins, Segal said.

Twins are also favored in the study of environmental effects on humans because of a similar reason ? in theory, identical twins give researchers the ability to study how environmental stimuli affect humans, using one twin as the control.

?[Twin research is] the most simple, but elegant way to study human behavior,? Segal said.

(AP) ? The man who once was among the world's most eligible bachelors has turned 30 ? but things are not so bad for Prince William as he celebrates his birthday with family and friends.

Palace officials say William will mark the milestone in private with his wife, the former Kate Middleton, and perhaps some close friends. They say a low key celebration is planned.

William has been pursuing a military career as a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot while easing into married life and taking on more royal duties. He is stationed at an air base in north Wales and was recently on a temporary deployment in the Falkland Islands in the south Atlantic.

He and his wife have made a number of public appearances in recent weeks, often representing his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, at events to mark her 60 years on the throne, a year-long celebration called the Diamond Jubilee.

He has seemed increasingly comfortable in public, escorting his wife, formally known as the Duchess of Cambridge, to high society soirees and "meet and greet" events.

There has been widespread speculation about the couple possibly starting a family. The talk has been fueled by William indicating that he would like to have children someday.

Along with Prince Harry, they are expected to play a prominent role as special ambassadors at the London Olympics.

William also stands to inherit an estimated 10 million pounds ($15.7 million) on his birthday under the terms of the will of his late mother, Princess Diana.

The precise amount is not known because the current value of the trust set up by his mother has not been made public.

Palace officials decline to comment on William's private finances, and it is possible he may choose to leave the money in a trust.

His brother, Prince Harry, stands to inherit a similar amount when he turns 30 in 2014.

William is second in line for the throne behind his father, Prince Charles.

Where's the Beef? | Magna Health and Fitness

Written by guest contributor Molly

In Minnesota we love a BBQ no matter the time of year (even in Winter, cuz we ARE that hard/crazy/bored) but Summer kicks ass for grilling every possible day you can.
I will and do grill/eat almost anything, although sometimes I just don?t want to eat meat, and sometimes I want something lighter than a big-ass meaty burger. This past weekend I did indeed want a big ass burger, but was in the mood for a change and wanted to save calories (yes, I wanted to have a drink)?I fell in love with the following meat-free Stuffed Portobello Burger recipe and had it two days in a fricken row!

Reasons portobello mushrooms rock. They?are not sissies, Jerk:

Minerals

Portobello mushroom?contain essential trace minerals including selenium, zinc and copper. Selenium functions as a coenzyme for some antioxidants and regulates thyroid hormones that contribute to regular development. Zinc plays a role in maintaining a healthy immune system, is essential for growth and helps regulate nerve impulses. Copper is part of many enzymes that facilitate energy production, iron metabolism, creation of connective tissue and healthy function of the brain and central nervous system. Portobello mushrooms are high in potassium and a source of manganese and iron.

Protein

Portobellos are a great low-calorie meat alternative. A 100-gram mushroom provides more than 3 grams of protein (you need this !), which contributes to muscle and tissue health, produces enzymes and hormones and helps transport the mushroom?s other nutrients around the body.

Calories

A grilled hamburger patty can have more than 235 calories and has saturated fat ? before the bun and condiments are added. However, a grilled portobello has around 30 calories and is also low in cholesterol and oil, which makes it a great alternative for healthy eaters that still want to eat a big ass grilled sandwich. Who you calling sissy ?

Stuffed Portobello Burger?

1/4 cup onions
1-2 tbsp balsamic vinegar ( I put this sh*t on everything)
2 portobello mushrooms
1/4 cup peppers (wish i had roasted peppers, and in that case use about an ounce or so I guess)
2-3 tbsp feta (original recipe used a slice of low fat mozzarella. Vegans can use Daiya cheese-that crap RULES http://www.daiyafoods.com/)
1 focaccia bun?(I indulged with this 180 calorie bun, and was glad because they get messy/sloppy and drip but you can use a Bread Flat or any Whole Grain bread/bun, but beware of the drip)
- napkins

Put balsamic, peppers and onion in a pan and cook on medium heat until translucent, about 4-5 minutes, then reduce to lowest heat, stirring occasionally while you grill the ?shrooms.

Preheat grill to medium, remove stems from mushrooms and brush with olive oil so they don?t stick to grill and a dash of S & P if you are so inclined.

Put shrooms on grill, stem side down for 6-7 minutes, then flip for another 4 minutes.

Top 1 mushroom with peppers, onions and cheese (I left some off to top off my burger at the end), then cover with the other mushroom, stem side down. Cook for about 2 minutes or until cheese has become ooey gooey goodness.

Slice your bun and toast it on the grill, then plop mushroom on your bun, top with with any remaining ingredients and shove it in your pie hole.

Added Yum Factors:

-I spread hummus on the bun one of the days for a change of flavor, the other day I used Grey Poupon. Use what you?d like, but be smart about it!
- Have vegetables with this sandwich. Go Greek by adding Feta!
- The original recipe also used grilled eggplant on this burger that they grilled each side for 2 minutes, but I don?t really like grilled eggplant and how in the hell would you fit that entire thing in your fricken mouth?
