Life extension enthusiasts rejoice: Your brain cells can outlive your body

Brain cells can live at least twice as long as the organisms in which they reside, according to new research.

The study, published today (Feb. 25) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that mouse neurons, or brain cells, implanted into rats can survive with the rats into old age, twice as long as the life span of the original mice.

The findings are good news for life extension enthusiasts.

"We are slowly but continuously prolonging the life of humans," said study co-author Dr. Lorenzo Magrassi, a neurosurgeon at the University of Pavia in Italy.

So if the human life span could be stretched to 160 years, "then you are not going to lose your neurons, because your neurons do not have a fixed lifetime."

Long-lived cells

While most of the cells in the human body are being constantly replaced, humans are born with almost all the neurons they will ever have. [10 Odd Facts About the Brain]

Magrassi and his colleagues wanted to know whether neurons could outlive the organisms in which they live (barring degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's).

To do so, the researchers took neurons from mice and implanted them into the brains of about 60 rat fetuses.

The team then let the rats live their entire lives, euthanizing them when they were moribund and unlikely to survive for more than two days, and then inspected their brains. The life span of the mice was only about 18 months, while the rats typically lived twice as long.

The rats were found to be completely normal (though not any smarter), without any signs of neurological problems at the end of their lives.

And the neurons that had been transplanted from mice were still alive when the rats died. That means it's possible the cells could have survived even longer if they were transplanted into a longer-lived species.

Life extension

The findings suggest that our brain cells won't fail before our bodies do.

"Think what a terrible thing it could be if you survive your own brain," Magrassi told LiveScience.

While the findings were done in rats, not humans, they could also have implications for neuronal transplants that could be used for degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease, Magrassi said.

But just because brain cells may be able to live indefinitely doesn't mean humans could live forever.

Aging is dependent on more than the life span of all the individual parts in the body, and scientists still don't understand exactly what causes people to age, Magrassi said.

Huawei Ascend P2 hitting Europe in Q2 for 399 euros, we go hands-on

Just ahead of Huawei's press event, Huawei's treated us to an early viewing of its new 8.4-millimeter smartphone, the Ascend P2. With Android 4.1, a quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 13-megapixel camera and a 720p 4.7-inch Gorilla Glass 2 Infinity Edge Display, it joins the likes of the Ascend Mate and D2 in forming the Chinese manufacturer's smartphone family in 2013. And boy, it's a slender, feather-light phone with a glossy backing that come sin both black and white. Design-wise, like those leaks, it looks an awful lot like its predecessor. Its notable feature is the highest-speed LTE connection seen so far in a smartphone, up to 150Mbps with support for LTE Cat4. We also got to play with Huawei's Emotion UI, which can draw on the 1GB of RAM housed inside. There's plenty of storage, with 16GB inside. The right side houses a volume switch and a physical camera button -- these were a bit plasticky, but has a nice matte finish. The other side is where the power button belongs, with both the headphone and micro-USB charging port found there. Huawei's focusing on battery life here as well, with a 2,420mA unit inside and the promise of consuming 20-percent less power, thanks to the handset's display technology.

With the aforementioned Emotion UI, there's the same clipboard animation across homescreen transitions, matching those other Ascend models. Getting into screen performance, it reflected a fair bit of ambient light, perhaps not the best display we've seen from Huawei -- there seems to be a space between the surface of the glass and the display itself. Light, but feels like we were often unable to keep hold of it. The buttons have the right amount of bite, although it would have been nice to see some premium materials used for these minor details. but the design reminds us a fair bit of the Panasonic's Eluga. Perhaps due to the lack of exotic color options, the phone wasn't quite as appealing as when we first got our hands on its predecessors. We'll have a hands-on video up soon. If you're in Europe you can pick this up in Q2 for €399 ($526)

Mosquitoes exposed to DEET once are less repelled by it a few hours later

Thursday, February 21, 2013

Mosquitoes are able to ignore the smell of the insect repellent DEET within a few hours of being exposed to it, according to research published February 20 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by James Logan, Nina Stanczyk and colleagues from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, UK.

Though most insects are strongly repelled by the smell of DEET, previous studies by Logan's research group have shown that some flies and mosquitoes carry a genetic change in their odor receptors that makes them insensitive to this smell. The new results reported in the PLOS ONE study uncover a response in mosquitoes based on short-term changes, not genetic ones.

"Our study shows that the effects of this exposure last up to three hours. We will be doing further research to determine how long the effect lasts", says Logan.

In this study, the authors tested changes in responses to DEET in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are notorious for biting during the day and are capable of transmitting dengue fever. They found that a brief exposure to DEET was sufficient to make some mosquitoes less sensitive to the repellent. Three hours after the exposure, these mosquitoes were not deterred from seeking attractants like heat and human skin despite the presence of DEET. The researchers found that this insensitivity to the smell could be correlated to a decrease in the sensitivity of odor receptors on the mosquito's antennae following a previous exposure. "We think that the mosquitoes are habituating to the repellent, similar to a phenomenon seen with the human sense of smell also. However, the human olfactory system is very different from a mosquito's, so the mechanism involved in this case is likely to be very different", explains Logan.

He adds, "This doesn't mean that we should stop using repellents - on the contrary, DEET is a very good repellent, and is still recommended for use in high risk areas. However, we are keeping a close eye on how mosquitoes can overcome the repellent and ways in which we can combat this."

Bumblebees Sense Electric Fields in Flowers

flower power A flower's electric field (right, with associated electric potential on the left) helps bumblebees predict where to find the most nectar. Image: Dominic Clarke

As they zero in on their sugary reward, foraging bumblebees follow an invisible clue: electric fields. Although some animals, including sharks, are known to have an electric sense, this is the first time the ability has been documented in insects.

Pollinating insects take in a large number of sensory cues, from colors and fragrances to petal textures and air humidity. Being able to judge which flowers will provide the most nectar, and which have already been plundered by other pollinators, helps them to use their energy more efficiently.

It has long been known that bumblebees build up a positive electrical charge as they rapidly flap their wings; when they land on flowers, this charge helps pollen to stick to their hairs. Daniel Robert, a biologist at the University of Bristol, UK, knew that such electrical interactions would temporarily change the electrical status of the flowers ? but he did not know whether bumblebees were picking up on this.

Flower power
Keen to find out, he and a team of colleagues measured the net charges of individuals of Bombus terrestris, a common species of bumblebee, by using sucrose to lure them into a Faraday pail ? an electrically shielded bucket that reacts to the charge of anything inside it. As expected, most bumblebees were carrying a positive charge.

Next, the team placed the insects into an arena with petunias (Petunia integrifolia) and measured the flowers' electrical potentials. Sure enough, when the bees landed, the flowers became a little more positively charged.

Finally, the team released bumblebees into an arena with artificial flowers, half of which were positively charged and carried a sucrose reward, and the other half of which were grounded and carried a bitter solution. Over time, the bees increasingly visited the rewarding charged flowers.

But when the researchers turned off the electrical charge on the flowers and re-released the trained bees, the insects visited rewarding flowers only about half of the time, as they would have by random chance. That suggested that the bees were detecting the electric fields and using them to guide their activities, rather than relying on other clues such as fragrance. The team reports its results in this week's Science.

?We think bumblebees are using this ability to perceive electrical fields to determine if flowers were recently visited by other bumblebees and are therefore worth visiting,? says Robert.

?We had no idea that this sense even existed," says Thomas Seeley, a behavioral biologist at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. "Assuming we can replicate the findings, this is going to open up a whole new window on insect sensory systems for us to study.?

Some experts suggest that the study has implications for insects other than bees. ?If you think about it, these discoveries could also apply to hoverflies and moths," says Robert Raguso, a chemical ecologist also at Cornell. "We don?t know if they can perceive charge differentials, but they burn a lot of energy while hovering around looking for pollen or nectar. So it would make sense for them to attend to such cues."

Trailer for ASUS MeMo Pad Smart 10 emerges, Tegra 3 and available in pink

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

ASUS has long been making Android tablets now, and they're often something worth taking note of. Their latest -- previously rumored -- slate, likely heading towards Mobile World Congress, has been unveiled by way of a YouTube trailer. Say hello to the ASUS MeMo Pad Smart 10. Catchy, isn't it?

Unlike some past offerings from ASUS, the MeMo Pad Smart 10 doesn't break any new boundaries, or push the specs to the limits. But, what it looks like is a pretty solid 10-inch tablet. Oh, and it'll also be available in pink, if you're into that sort of thing.

We don't get a whole lot of information from the clip, but we do find out that the tablet houses a Tegra 3 processor, a 5MP rear camera, and a 10-inch IPS display that promises some impressive viewing angles. We're also treated to SonicMaster sound technology, and a glimpse at some of the bundled software, although anyone familiar with ASUS tablets won't be too surprised by what we see. All this fits in with earlier, leaked information on the tablet, and at the same time isn't too surprising. Neither is the software, it's pretty much a given that we'll be looking at Jelly Bean, but as yet there's no confirmation on which version.

So, we're not looking at a bleeding edge tablet here, but what we are seeing is potentially a great value 10-inch tablet if it lands at the right price. We'll be on the look out next week in Barcelona, so keep it locked to Android Central in the days ahead for all the best from MWC 2013.

Flyers Beat Penguins 6-5: Jakub Voracek Scores Hat Trick, Game-Winning Goal (VIDEO)

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers picked up right where the two rivals left off in the playoffs last season.

Jakub Voracek scored the go-ahead goal with 1:31 remaining in the third period to cap his first career NHL hat trick, leading the Flyers to a wild 6-5 victory over the Penguins on Wednesday.

"It was a great game for the players, the fans, for everybody," Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said. "It was good playoff-type hockey."

It was the kind of wide-open, back-and-forth, playoff-type hockey the two teams displayed during their Eastern Conference quarterfinal round series last season. The Penguins and Flyers combined for 45 goals through the first four games of the series, a best-of-seven set Philadelphia won in six games.

Pittsburgh took a two-goal lead Wednesday before Philadelphia scored the next four goals.

The Flyers had leads of 4-2 and 5-3 in the third period, only to watch as the Penguins rallied, tying the game with 2:03 remaining.

Voracek's third goal came 33 seconds after Pittsburgh's Brandon Sutter tied the game on a wraparound.

Voracek, who had a career-best four points Monday against the New York Islanders, threw a shot from behind the goal line, which bounced off Penguins goaltender Tomas Vokoun and into the net.

"I didn't want to turn it over or do something stupid, so I just tried to throw it to the net," Voracek said.

Voracek's first goal of the game came on the power play, giving the Flyers a 3-2 lead with 9.9 seconds left in the second period. His second, the 200th point of his NHL career, put Philadelphia ahead by two goals 18 seconds into the third period.

Wayne Simmonds had two goals and an assist and Nicklas Grossman also scored for the Flyers.

Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov made 27 saves for his eighth victory.

Evgeni Malkin and James Neal scored power-play goals, while Sutter, Tyler Kennedy and Matt Niskanen also scored for the Penguins, who had a three-game win streak end.

Penguins defenseman Paul Martin also had three assists.

Captain Sidney Crosby, with 25 points, is tied with Buffalo's Thomas Vanek for NHL scoring lead after getting an assist.

Vokoun, making his first start since a home loss against New Jersey, stopped 26 shots.

"It's unfortunate," Crosby said. "We had a good start and didn't find a way to hold the lead."

The Flyers capped a season-long six-game road trip with two victories. Philadelphia, which routed the New York Islanders 7-0 Monday, struggled early on the road trip, dropping three of its first four games before recovering with two wins.

"Anytime you finish a road trip with two big wins it's huge," said Flyers captain Claude Giroux, who had two assists. "It was good to get a couple wins in a row again."

The Flyers, despite playing 12 of their first 18 games on the road, appear right at home in Pittsburgh, where they won for the eighth time in 10 games. Philadelphia is also 6-1 at Consol Energy Center since it opened in 2010.

Philadelphia appeared to put the game away after Simmonds' second goal of the game, which hit off Niskanen's stick and went into the net, to make it 5-3 at 7:36 of the third.

But the Penguins rallied thanks in part to back-to-back 5-on-3 power plays. Neal's power-play goal at 12:46 made it 5-4 and the Penguins appeared to initially tie it with 5:39 left, but a would-be power-play goal from Chris Kunitz was kicked past Bryzgalov.

Sutter got it done, tying the game with 2:03 remaining.

"We stuck with things and earned the breaks we got, and we were able to tie the game," Crosby said. "We had the right mentality, sometimes it's a little too late."

Niskanen gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead at 5:07 of the first, the 14th time in 17 games Pittsburgh scored the opening goal.

Defenseman Kris Letang's shot deflected off a Philadelphia skate to Niskanen, who ripped a hard shot past Bryzgalov.

Laviolette called a timeout after the goal in an attempt to spark his sluggish team, which had just two shots on goal to that point, but it worked in the Penguins' favor.

Flyers forward Harry Zolnierczyk was whistled for boarding 13 seconds later, putting Pittsburgh's No. 2-ranked power play on the ice.

Malkin nearly converted seven seconds into the advantage, as Bryzgalov gloved a shot against the post, but the play was ruled inconclusive after an extra look by officials.

No matter.

Malkin scored later on the power play at 7:15 of the first, slamming Martin's rebound off the end boards inside the post. It was the ninth straight game the Penguins scored a power-play goal.

The Flyers settled down, scoring twice in the span of a minute to tie the game.

Grossman got the first one, firing a loose puck across the line after a wild net-mouth scramble that had four Penguins piled in the crease, desperately trying to prevent a goal.

Letang tried his best to keep the puck out of the net, stopping the initial shot at the goal line, but it eventually popped out to Grossman, who scored the Flyers' opening goal 11:49 of the first.

Simmonds scored a minute later, taking a Danny Briere pass and powering his way to the top of the crease where he slid a shot past Vokoun.

Then things got heated between the cross-state rivals and the penalty box quickly filled with three players apiece less than a minute after the tying goal.

Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland went off for roughing, Flyers forward Brayden Schenn for cross-checking, and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties were also issued while Tanner Glass and Simmonds had a fight.

"I think we got too emotional in the game, too involved with the extra curriculars," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said.

The teams played a clean second period, combining for just three penalties, but the last one, an elbowing call against the Penguins' Craig Adams, resulted in Voracek's go-ahead goal with 9.9 seconds left in the period.

Voracek scored his second of the game 18 seconds into the third period, taking advantage of a miscommunication between Vokoun and Martin behind the net. Braydon Coburn's shot after the turnover bounced to Voracek, who made it a two-goal game.

Kennedy cut the deficit to one goal at 5:29, putting the rebound from Martin's point shot behind Bryzgalov before Simmonds' scored his second of the game at 7:36.

"Obviously we started off pretty rocky, and kind of finished pretty rocky, but I think in between we played a pretty solid game," Simmonds said.

NOTES: Flyers forward Matt Read left the game with an upper-body injury. ... The rivals meet again March 7 in Philadelphia. ... Both teams play next at home against Florida. The Flyers host the Panthers Thursday, while the Pittsburgh welcomes Florida the following night.

UK estate agent Countrywide plans stock market return

LONDON (Reuters) - Countrywide Holdings, Britain's largest estate agent by revenue, plans to return to the stock market after nearly six years in private hands, hoping a fragile housing market recovery will be enough to tempt investors amid growing demand for new issues.

The company, bought for 1.1 billion pounds by a U.S. private equity firm in May 2007, said on Wednesday it planned to raise 200 million pounds by selling new shares.

It will use the money to repay some debt and grow the business, including through acquisitions.

Countrywide declined to say what it might be worth after floating, but expected to be included in the London Stock Exchange's FTSE-250 index <.ftmc> of mid-cap companies.

Rising equity markets across Europe have fuelled a pick up in initial public offerings (IPO) in recent months. British housebuilder Crest Nicholson returned to the stock market last week.

Countrywide Chief executive Grenville Turner said that listing showed the IPO market was functioning normally again following the financial crisis, and was also encouraged by signs of improvement in the mortgage and housing markets.

"Sentiment is much stronger than it was five years ago and the availability of affordable mortgages is coming back," Turner said on a conference call with journalists.

House price data is mixed in Britain but there is tentative evidence to suggest prices are steadying as government measures kick in to encourage banks to lend more.

The average house price in Britain fell from a peak of 199,612 pounds in August 2007 to 154,663 pounds in April 2009 before climbing to 162,932 in January this year, according to mortgage provider Halifax, part of Lloyds Banking Group .

Share prices for the country's major housebuilders have soared over the last year as a result of the government's show of support, but some analysts question whether political initiatives will be enough as banks seek to reduce their risks and store capital to meet tougher regulations.

As part of a wider refinancing deal with its lenders, Countrywide said it had raised a further 100 million pounds of debt in a move that will cut its annual interest bill from 25 million pounds to less than 3 million pounds.

Countrywide, which sells and rents houses and flats, was listed between 1986 and 2007 before it was taken private at the peak of the market by U.S. private equity group Apollo. Fellow private equity firm Oaktree Capital took control in 2009 via a debt for equity swap.

Countrywide makes 25 percent of its sales in the more affluent London and south-east area of Britain, and interest in buying homes was increasing across the country despite "regional variations", according to Turner.

The company reported earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA), excluding one off items, of 63 million pounds for 2012, on revenues that rose six percent to 540 million pounds.

Goldman Sachs, Jefferies International Ltd and Credit Suisse will be bookrunners for the listing.

In the affplaybook.com forum we?ve been discussing how to approach Kindle publishing from a business perspective and not an affiliate perspective. There?s an important difference!

Publishing is one of those things that not many affiliates get right. That?s unfortunate because it has the potential to offer mostly passive income after the initial work is done. I wanted to give you some insights into getting started in this post.

What is Kindle Publishing?

Come on, really? ;) Kindle publishing is nothing more than selling a book on the Amazon marketplace. In short ? you write a book, publish it on Amazon, and collect the commissions. Of course, it isn?t quite that easy but still close.

An Affiliate Walked Into a Bar..

?to write a Kindle book?ok, I?m obviously not going to earn much money writing comedy books, but think about how an average affiliate would approach Kindle publishing. They would probably do something with spun content, PLR, cheap overseas writers, etc. To make up for the lack of quality, they would just do hundreds and hundreds of books.

This approach won?t work well, if at all. First, Amazon is pretty strict about the PLR thing. Second, real people will actually review your books. Your books probably won?t get a ton of reviews (at least initially) so if people see a 1 star review you can expect sales to grind to a halt. It?s also safe to assume that Amazon will become stricter on publishers in the future.

Kindle publishing is not something to do unless you are willing to put in the work to make it viable long term. This means (to some of you) it?s going to be boring, you won?t see a lot of money for a while, and it will feel like you aren?t making progress. This is something you build over time that has the potential to last ?forever? with almost no upkeep or maintenance.

What?s the potential?

Will you become a millionaire publishing books on Amazon? Doubtful. Can you make a very steady, and relatively easy 4 and maybe even 5 figures per month? Absolutely! It will take months to get there though. This isn?t like an affiliate campaign where you can hit your first $100/day in a short matter of time.

What do I write about?

You can write about literally anything, but some stuff works better than others. A novel might take you a long time to write, where a basic ?how-to? book might go much faster.

This is key ? You?re not trying to write one magic book to make all your sales. Some of your books will sell well, others will flop. You want to be constantly writing and publishing books. No one single book will generate enough sales to make it worth having just that one. Another benefit of writing lots of books is cross promotional possibilities. You can actually have a significant effect on your books exposure through various promotional efforts in the Kindle marketplace.

Spend some time researching what people write. Download some books and see how they?re structured, how long they are, etc. Keep in mind, a lot of the self published books are crap so don?t necessarily copy their style.

But I hate writing!

This is probably not what you want to hear, but it?s the truth ? you can outsource your writing but it?s not going to work well. The problem is that most books won?t make a ton on their own, so what you would have to pay to have something (of the quality it needs to be) written will be more than the book would potentially make for years.

That doesn?t mean you have to do all the writing yourself. You might be able to partner with someone and each do half, you might have a relative who?s a good writer, etc.

There are tools to make writing faster too, like Dragon Naturally Speaking. Once you get into a good writing rhythm, it actually doesn?t take that long to crank something out.

Not all books need to be super long. Spend some time looking at Kindle books, and you?ll discover some formats that enable you to put a book together relatively fast.

There is so much potential, not just with selling the books themselves but promoting products inside the books and building email lists. All that is stuff for a possible future post! In the meantime, you can read more about Kindle publishing here https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/help

If this sounds interesting to you, I would encourage you to start writing and publishing books asap. You?ll look back on this post in 6 months and be glad you did.

Sony Alpha A58, NEX3N press images possibly caught making the rounds

We've already seen hints that Sony wants to rejuvenate its entry-level interchangeable lens cameras. Purported press images snagged by Digicam Info, however, support talk what could be an evolutionary yet meaningful refresh. The Alpha A58 you see above appears to only have minor ergonomic tweaks, but introduces a truly standard hot shoe and a new 18-55mm, f/3.5-5.6 II kit lens. The sighting backs earlier Sony Alpha Rumors claims, which also had the A58 carrying a roughly 20-megapixel sensor. A second set of pictures from DI (an example of which is after the break) also validates a previous live leak of the NEX-3N mirrorless cam, whose centerpiece is still its motorized zoom control. Neither Sony camera has a leaked release date, although the increasing flow of details suggests there isn't much more of a wait.

Off Beat: 'Top Gun' owes a debt to Vancouver fighter pilot

Monday, February 18, 2013

The new 3-D version of "Top Gun" owes its existence to the 1986 movie, but there is another contributor to its cinematic DNA. It's a film featuring ? and made possible by ? a Vancouver fighter pilot.

That documentary is "Threshold: The Blue Angels Experience."

A recent Columbian story told how Harley Hall was shot down on Jan. 27, 1973, during the last few hours of Vietnam War hostilities.

Some of his old friends who were interviewed for our story noted how Hall's personality and flying skills are evident in "Threshold," which was filmed when he commanded the Navy's Blue Angels precision flying team in the early 1970s.

Former Navy pilot Ernie Christensen also mentioned that camera innovations and filming techniques pioneered in "Threshold" were used in the filming of "Top Gun," which is being released on 3-D Blu-ray.

"We came up with shots and camera angles that had never been seen before," said "Threshold" producer-director Paul Marlow.

But before they could start filming, Marlow had to sell the idea to Hall.

"He was the key guy," Marlow said by phone from Seattle. "I was in the military, and you get an eye for spotting a leader. He was a leader.

"I told him that his business was to drum up recruiting for Navy aviation, and mine was to take pictures of interesting things."

Even though Marlow was a self-described long-haired guy in cowboy boots, during an era of protests against the war in Vietnam, Hall welcomed him.

"He got it," Marlow said.

And after seeing results of the filming, Hall and the other pilots were even more impressed, Marlow said.

"We'd share footage with the team and they'd egg each other on: 'Let's do this!'"

When the Blue Angels booked a South American tour, there was room for one film crew, Marlow said. Hall took along the "Threshold" team and rejected a request from the PR office at McDonnell Douglas -- the company that built the Blue Angels' F-4 Phantom II fighters.

Christensen, who commanded the "Top Gun" training program from 1981 to 1983, was the link between the documentary and people doing setup work for the Tom Cruise film.

"Some cinematographers were talking in the hallway and an ex-instructor introduced me," he said.

Christensen told them they would understand what it's like to be in the cockpit of a jet fighter if they saw "Threshold."

Work out wiser: How to avoid stress fractures

Before you get sweaty in Zumba or do one more kick-kick-punch combo in cardio kickboxing, there are important parts of your body that needs a little attention: your ankles and feet.

Get warmed up

Warm-ups might seem tedious, but they are absolutely essential to your health during workouts. "Concentrate on warming up the muscle groups you're planning to hit in the workout through a full range of motion. Static stretches won't do the trick here; you want moves that bring blood into your muscles and increase flexibility to keep yourself safe while you sweat," says Amy Clover, CPT, CES PN1, of Four Leaf Fitness.

Take it slow

Haven't exercised in a while? Then you'll want to take a lesson from the tortoise ? as in "The Tortoise and the Hare": Slow and steady wins this race.

This technique will help you develop the right form while building some stamina.

"You'll teach your body how to do it correctly and gain strength faster than you would if you sped through your workout. Give your muscles the chance to learn; you can speed it up for more of a cardio effect as soon as you feel strong enough to do it with good form," says Clover.

Build your core

Your core muscles are incredibly important ? they help you balance and sit up. The strength of your core is really important.

"In almost all movements, keeping your core tight throughout will help correct imbalances and keep you from injuring your lower back. To correctly tighten your core, pull in that area right under your belly button (as if someone were going to punch you in the stomach), then think about reaching both sets of obliques toward each other (like you're tightening a corset)," says Clover. "This will activate all your stabilizing core muscles, helping to protect you from an unstable spine."

Concentrate

While you are doing the slow and deliberate motions to learn the moves well, also focus on the motions to ensure that you're performing the exercises correctly. "For example, if you're doing seated cable rows, concentrate on pulling those shoulder blades together, shoulders down away from your ears and the muscles down your back engaging to bring those handles toward your sides. You'll work out safer and smarter (meaning you'll see results faster)," says Clover.

Wipe down

OK, this may not have much to do with protecting your bones, but everything to do with protecting your health. Be sure to always wipe down the equipment as you work out. "Nasty bacteria (like staph) live on sweaty benches and cardio machines," says Clover. "Make sure they don't make your skin their new home by wiping down equipment with antibacterial wipes (available in most gyms) and use a towel to cover shared surfaces when you work out (remember which side you put down)."

G20 defuses talk of 'currency war', no accord on debt

MOSCOW: The Group of 20 nations declared on Saturday there would be no 'currency war' and deferred plans to set new debt-cutting targets in an indication of concern about the fragile state of the world economy.

Japan's expansive policies, which have driven down the yen, escaped criticism in a statement thrashed out in Moscow by financial policymakers from the G20, which groups developed and emerging markets and accounts for 90 percent of the world economy.

After late night talks, finance ministers and central bankers agreed on wording closer than expected to a joint statement issued last Tuesday by the Group of Seven rich nations backing market-determined exchange rates.

A draft communique seen by delegates on Friday had steered clear of the G7's call for economic policy not to be targeted at exchange rates. But the final version included a G20 commitment to refrain from competitive devaluations and stated monetary policy would be directed at price stability and growth.

"The language has been strengthened since our discussions last night," Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty told reporters. "It's stronger than it was, but it was quite clear last night that everyone around the table wants to avoid any sort of currency disputes."

The communique did not single out Japan for aggressive monetary and fiscal policies that have seen the yen drop 20 percent, a trend that may now continue.

"The market will take the G20 statement as an approval for what it has been doing -- selling of the yen," said Neil Mellor, currency strategist at Bank of New York Mellon in London. "No censure of Japan means they will be off to the money printing presses."

The statement reflected a substantial, but not complete, endorsement of Tuesday's statement by the G7 nations - the United States, Japan, Britain, Canada, France, Germany and Italy.

"We all agreed on the fact that we refuse to enter any currency war," French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici told reporters.

The text also contained a commitment to credible medium-term fiscal strategy, but stopped short of setting specific goals.

A debt-cutting pact struck in Toronto in 2010 will expire this year if leaders fail to agree to extend it at a G20 summit of leaders in St Petersburg in September.

European Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said he expected concrete debt targets to be agreed at the September meeting.

"We have a common view on the need to have a credible medium-term plans for fiscal consolidation, which is also essential so we have foundation for sustainable growth," he told Reuters.

The United States says it is on track to meet its Toronto pledge but argues that the pace of future fiscal consolidation must not snuff out demand. Germany and others are pressing for another round of binding debt-cutting goals.

Backing in the communique for the use of domestic monetary policy to support economic recovery reflected the U.S. Federal Reserve's commitment to monetary stimulus through quantitative easing, or QE, to promote recovery and jobs.

QE entails large-scale bond buying -- $85 billion a month in the Fed's case -- that helps economic growth but creates money, much of which has leaked into emerging markets, threatening to destabilise them.

That was offset in the communique by a commitment to minimise "negative spillovers" of the resulting financial flows that emerging markets fear may pump up asset bubbles and ruin their export competitiveness.

"Major developed nations (should) pay attention to their monetary policy spillover," Vice Finance Minister Zhu Guangyao was quoted by state news agency Xinhua as saying in Moscow.

"Major developed countries' implementation of excessively relaxed currency policy has an influence on the world economy."

Russia, this year's chair of the G20, said the group had failed to reach agreement on medium-term budget deficit levels and also expressed concern about ultra-loose policies that it and other big emerging economies say could store up trouble for later.

Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said a rebalancing of global growth required more than an adjustment of exchange rates.

"Structural reforms in all countries, either with a positive or negative balance of payments, should play a bigger role," he said in an address to Saturday's talks.

The G20 put together a huge financial backstop to halt a market meltdown in 2009 but has failed to reach those heights since. At successive meetings, Germany has pressed the United States and others to do more to tackle their debts. Washington in turn has urged Berlin to do more to increase demand.

On currencies, the G20 text reiterated its commitment last November, "to move more rapidly toward mores market-determined exchange rate systems and exchange rate flexibility to reflect underlying fundamentals, and avoid persistent exchange rate misalignments".

It said disorderly exchange rate movements and excess volatility in financial flows could harm economic and financial stability.

Touchbased Ubuntu preview coming February 21st, will work on Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4

It's not like we didn't have ample warning, so by now anyone wanting to try out the new Ubuntu smartphone OS should have gotten hold of a Galaxy Nexus to be their test device. Still don't have one? Then you'll be pleased to know that a Nexus 4 will actually serve just as well, and you have six days to get equipped. The Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview will be made public on February 21st alongside the open source code and all the tools necessary to flash those two devices.

The official aim is to help devs and enthusiasts learn the platform and start building software for it, whether for core functions or for when a full third-party app store eventually goes live. The bigger picture is that, by the time Ubuntu 13.10 launches in October, an app written in this platform's Qt/QML lingo should be able to run on any Ubuntu device -- whether it be a PC, TV, tablet or smartphone -- with no porting required. Rest assured that we have a couple of Nexii at the ready and we fully intend to give this newcomer a thorough hazing / write-up as soon as possible.
