My Two Blessings: Sunday Salon: September wrapup

Wow! September reading wise is a really big blur.? Surprised to find I only completed 8 books and half of those were audio books.?
  1. Memory in Death - J.D. Robb
  2. I'll Be Watching You - Charles De Lint? (ebook)
  3. Life Skills for Kids (dnf)
  4. Born in Death - J.D. Robb (audiobook)?
  5. One Hundred Years of Solitude - Gabriel Garcia Marquez
  6. Innocent in Death - J.D. Robb (audiobook)
  7. The Raw Shark Texts - Steven Hall
  8. Creation in Death - J.D.Robb
I started a few and just couldn't get into them.? I've been listening to the In death series and find myself listening more and reading less. ? Presently in a non fiction mode and for the past week have been reading Journeys on the Silk Road: A desert explorer, Buddha's secret library, and the unearthing of the world's oldest printed book (yes it's a mouthful of a title) by Joyce Morgan and Conrad Walters.? Almost halfway through and enjoying it.? Guess I just read non fiction a lot slower than fiction.?? Also reading and writing my way through Writing Begins with the Breath by Laraine Herring.?? Happy to say the book has really stimulated my writing.?? I'll have a few snippets from the book to share soon.? Hopefully it will also stimulate me to write a few book reviews.? I'm so behind.

Speaking of which I'm thoroughly enjoying my online creative writing course and have some very unique and creative fellow writers joining in.

Today is the 30th anniversary of Banned Books Week which I highlighted on 52 Books in 52 Weeks. Be sure to check out the list and see what books have been challenged this past year. ?? I've also declared October as spooky reads month and I'm determined to finally read Bram Stoker's The Snake's Pass which I've had in the stacks forever.?? Also have a few other scary books on the shelves going to try and read this month:? Dean Koontz Odd Thomas, T.L. Hines The Dead Whisper On, Dan Simmons The Hollow Man and Ted Dekker's The Priest's Graveyard.? If I at least get Snake's Pass read, then I'll be happy.?

Starting the countdown for National Novel Writing month in November.? Will spend the next 31 days plotting and planning so I'll be ready to hit the ground running come November 1st.??

How is your fall shaping up??

Georgian opposition supporters flood capital

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) ? An estimated 100,000 opposition supporters thronged the center of Georgia's capital on Saturday in a show of strength days ahead of a parliamentary election that presents the toughest challenge to the future of Mikhail Saakashvili's government since he became president nearly nine years ago.

The capital, Tbilisi, where a third of Georgia's population lives, long ago turned against Saakashvili. Many people here are disturbed by what they describe as his authoritarian rule, pointing to his control over parliament, the courts and the prosecutor's office.

"He created a system of oppression and covered it with the pretty facade of democracy," said Dali Dvalishvili, who attended the boisterous campaign rally. Although trained as a lawyer, the 28-year-old woman said she was unable to work in a system "where the prosecutor's office dictates everything."

Under Saakashvili, the former Soviet republic has become a U.S. ally and worked toward closer integration with NATO and the European Union. In Monday's election, the president is under pressure to prove his commitment to democracy by holding a free and fair vote.

The election has added significance because it ushers in a new political system that will give greater powers to the parliament and prime minister. After Saakashvili's second and last term ends next year, the party that has a majority in parliament will have the right to name the prime minister, who will acquire many of the powers now held by the president.

Saakashvili's United National Movement, which now holds nearly 80 percent of the seats in parliament, is up against Georgian Dream, a coalition formed by Bidzina Ivanishvili, a billionaire businessman who made his fortune in Russia.

Most observers see the race as too close to call, although they give the governing party the edge.

The mood was upbeat on Saturday as people of all ages gathered on Freedom Square for Ivanishvili's giant campaign rally. Many wore Georgian Dream T-shirts in blue, white or black.

"Saakashvili's system based on lawlessness and torture should be destroyed," Ivanishvili told the crowd.

Saakashvili's campaign was hit hard by the release two weeks ago of shocking videos showing prisoners in a Tbilisi jail being beaten and sodomized. The government moved quickly to stem the anger, replacing Cabinet ministers blamed for the abuse and arresting prison staff, but many saw the videos as illustrating the excesses of his government.

Craft Spirits Week Chicago | Chicago Foodies

David McCowan

September 28 2012 - 12:09 PM

In case you haven?t noticed, the craft spirits scene is booming in Chicago. Like, big time.

It began in 2004 with Lake Bluff?s North Shore Distillery, was followed up by Koval ? the first distillery within Chicago proper ? in 2008, and continued last year with the debut of FEW Spirits in Evanston.

But just as Andy Warhol once said: ?One?s company, two?s a crowd, and three?s a party.? And this party?s just getting started.

2012 has marked the start for three new area distilleries ? Letherbee, Quincy Street, and Tailwinds ? and, not uncoincidentally, it also marks the city?s first Craft Sprit Week.

Organized by North Shore, Koval and FEW, Craft Spirit Week Chicago is a collection of events around town focusing on the small batch work done here and elsewhere, and it brings together like-minded folks to celebrate everything scratch-produced. The festivities run next week ? October 1 -6, 2012 ? and feature interesting bar programs, spirit-driven dinners, and the Independent Spirits Expo.

?

The most-up-to-date details as well as times and prices (if applicable) can be found on the Craft Sprit Week Calendar of Events, but here?s a quick smattering of where the best drinks are to be had next week.

Tuesday, October 2 ? Spirit Specifics

During the day, ? Who needs work anyway? ? there are two major educational opportunities with a whiskey class at the Columbia Yacht Club and the first of a four-part ?Mezcal Master? class at Binny?s South Loop. Both are big bucks and require reservations. Space is limited.

The Art of Aperitifs and DigestifsMore up my alley, however, are the chances for hands-on learning happening later in the evening. Simultaneous cocktail and spirit tastings are popping up all around town with either no, or small covers. Serious whiskey aficionados can hit up Jerry?s in Wicker Park or Delilah?s for spirit samples, but those looking for something a little more out of the ordinary might want to check out Evolution Wines & Spirits in Bucktown ? which is featuring unusual rums from Great Lakes, Old Sugar, Barrel House and Seven Fathoms ? or Fountainhead ? which is featuring a program on aperitifs and digestifs with Koval. And for those looking for fun over erudition, The Whistler is hosting a ?Left Coast v. Third Coast? gin cocktail smackdown. As much as a love the stuff from St. George and Anchor, I?ve got to root for hometowners Letherbee.

Finally, for the late-night set, the evening ends with a cocktail competition at Watershed titled ?Bring the Weird.? Your guess is as good as mine, but the downstairs space has never left me disappointed.

Wednesday, October 3 ? Independent Spirits Expo

Wednesday marks the second time the Indie Spirits Expo has come to Chicago and the event has greatly expanded since last year. Running from 5:00-9:30 pm at the Carmichael?s Steakhouse Warehouse in the West Loop, this bazaar offers meet-and-greets and samples from nearly 100 craft distilleries. VIP and regular admission tickets are still available at $75 and $55.

If four and a half hours of booze isn?t enough ? or if you don?t want to drop the dime for the main event ? a free afterparty runs all night at Delilah?s.

Independent Spirits Expo

?Thursday and Friday, October 4-5 ? Spirit Dinners

On the third day, the bible tells us, God created food to soak up the alcohol. Or so I think I heard in Sunday school.

Regardless, eats are getting paired with spirits on Thursday at a Fountainhead/FEW dinner and a Big Jones/North Shore dinner, with oysters and absinthe being paired later at the newly opened Savoy.

North Shore returns for another dinner at 2 Sparrows on Friday.

Saturday, October 6 ? Distillery Tours

Finally, Craft Spirit Week Chicago ends quite fittingly with a peek behind the scenes at the DIY drive being so many of these outfits. Most of Chicagoland?s distilleries will be open for tours as well as both Journeyman and Great Lakes nearby in Michigan. Swing by to see how your favorite hooch is born.

For more information, check out the Craft Spirit Week Chicago website or check their Facebook page for the latest updates.

NFL refs back; Ravens lead Browns 23-10 after 3

BALTIMORE (AP) ? The regular NFL officials returned to cheers Thursday night, and Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco delighted the crowd by throwing for one touchdown and running for another to help Baltimore take a 23-10 lead over the winless Cleveland Browns after three quarters.

A 63-yard interception return for a touchdown by Cary Williams with 15 seconds left in the third quarter turned a slim 16-10 lead into a 13-point cushion. The pass by rookie Brandon Weeden was intended for Travis Benjamin, but Williams jumped the out pattern and raced down the right sideline with his first career interception.

A lockout of the league's regular officials ended late Wednesday, bringing about the exit of the controversial replacement refs. And so, finally, the real officials were in place for Week 4, beginning with this matchup of AFC North rivals.

As they walked onto the field hours before the game, the officiating crew received a round of applause and shouts of encouragement from fans in the lower sections. Head linesman Wayne Mackie and line judge Jeff Seeman both tipped their caps to acknowledge the support.

And then, before the pregame coin flip, referee Gene Steratore greeted the players at midfield by saying, "Good evening, men, it's good to be back."

Many in the sellout crowd stood and roared their approval.

After a scoreless first quarter, Baltimore went up 6-0 on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Flacco to Torrey Smith. The conversion failed.

On the Ravens' next drive, rookie Justin Tucker kicked a 45-yard field goal.

Cleveland got back into the game with an 11-play, 94-yard march directed by Weeden, who connected with Greg Little for 43 yards before rookie Trent Richardson ran in from the 1.

A light rain turned heavier at halftime, but it did not immediately deter the Baltimore offense.

On the opening drive of the third quarter, Flacco took the Ravens 89 yards in 13 plays for a 16-7 lead. Flacco completed five passes during the march, including three to Anquan Boldin for 60 yards, before the quarterback ran in from the 1 on a third-and-goal.

Later in the quarter, Tucker missed the first field goal try of his career, a 47-yarder that sailed wide right.

The Browns were forced to play most of the game without wide receiver and punt returner Joshua Cribbs, who left with a head injury after absorbing a hard hit late in the first quarter. Cribbs was running back a punt when he lost his helmet while taking a shot from the shoulder of Dannell Ellerbe. Cribbs lay prone for several minutes before being helped from the field.

Cribbs lost the ball on the play, and Jameel McClain recovered the fumble. But Baltimore gave it back when Flacco's pass into the end zone was intercepted by linebacker Craig Robertson.

Flacco had thrown 125 passes without being picked off before Robertson stepped in front of Anquan Boldin.

During pregame practice, Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis spoke with Steratore and gave him a hug. Steratore turned around and shook hands with Ravens safety Ed Reed, who spoke out against the replacement refs.

Many of the fans filing into the stadium spoke delightedly about the demise of the replacements.

"It was very chaotic," 44-year-old Karen Riley said. "They couldn't control the players on either side. There were bad calls, constantly, and in some cases refs making different calls at the same time."

Eric Warthen, who attended the game with his son, said, "I grew up in a union family so I understand. We really didn't get the best product.

"I don't think they tarnished the NFL image. I think they tarnished (Commissioner) Roger Goodell's image," Warthen said. "When he came on a few years ago he had a no-nonsense attitude, a safety-first attitude. With the replacement refs there have been a lot of bad hits."

Hours before kickoff, as Steratore prepared for his first game in nearly a year, he said, "Very elated to be back. It feels like being back home."

European carmakers braced for grim future

PARIS (AP) ? European carmakers were preparing for a future of labor strife, lower sales and more financial uncertainty as they set out their latest models at the Paris Auto Show on Thursday.

France's Peugeot, Citroen and Renault see the event as a chance to show off their newest cars and prototypes to a hometown crowd, but European executives seemed just as preoccupied with the factories they believe must close to cope with a shrinking market.

The latest data show new passenger car registrations in the European Union dropped 8.9 percent in August, the 11th consecutive monthly decline. And the industry is bloated ? there are too many factories to build a dwindling number of cars.

Bailouts from European governments failed to force the carmakers to overhaul their businesses, unlike in the U.S., where 18 car factories were closed after the U.S. government bailed out GM, Chrysler and some suppliers, according to industry analyst Laurent Petizon of Alix Partners. Since 2010, only three European factories have closed.

"The problem is that there hasn't been a profound restructuring," Petizon said.

He argues that the recent years' financial turmoil in Europe is not the cause of the problems afflicting the continent's carmakers. "The crisis only brought into focus the problems that were there," he said.

Most European countries have strong labor protections that can delay layoffs for months after they're announced. Governments are reluctant to facilitate job cuts at a time when unemployment is already in the double-digits in many countries, including France, Italy and Spain.

The consequence, however, is that the automotive sector, one of the continent's most important industries, keeps suffering.

PSA Peugeot Citroen will close one factory in France this year, but the plan to lay off 8,000 workers has run into opposition from France's powerful unions and the government.

The company's chief executive, Philippe Varin, insisted Thursday that the only solution is to close plants, no matter how politically difficult.

"This situation is not tenable over the long term," he said.

Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat and Chrysler, has long advocated that the European Union coordinate such decisions and help carmakers restructure ? since individual countries tend to fight just to save plants on their home turf.

"I think it would be much more beneficial if this became a European problem as opposed to a national problem," he said. "There's no flag that will fix this."

Rebecca Lindland, director of research for IHS Automotive, said the current downturn is no blip. Car manufacturers are facing a long-term reduction in demand in Europe.

"If you can't change demand, you have to change supply," she said.

As far out as 2020, the forecast "really never gets above 15.5 million units," down from 17.5 million in 2007, she said. Plant closures, which many carmakers have been calling for, are "incredibly difficult politically but (are) incredibly necessary."

Even Volkswagen, which has fared better than the manufacturers in Italy and France, is preparing for a long-term contraction, especially in southern Europe.

VW's sales and marketing boss, Christian Klinger, said Thursday that Spain's overall market had fallen by half since 2007 and Italy is down as well.

"It's a development that we all have to live with," he told reporters at the Paris Auto Show.

For VW, North American sales growth remains "relatively stable" while China continues to grow and Russia is "very dynamic," Klinger added.

Varin, the Peugeot CEO, said the situation is only getting worse, with Germany's economy, the traditional powerhouse of Europe, now slowing down as well.

"Our working hypothesis is that the market is at a plateau for the next three years and that 2015 won't look very different from 2012," he said.

The industry will have to redefine itself in coming years, both because new markets like China and Brazil are vitally important and because the economic troubles of the past several years have taken a toll.

Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Renault, said the crisis stretches well beyond the auto industry, with ramifications for years to come: "We have to prepare ourselves for a relatively long period of recovery for Europe. It's not only a financial or a currency crisis, Europe is facing a super-problem of competitiveness."

Sound Advice On Making Bankruptcy Work For You | Siben & Siben ...

TIP! Find the right time to take action. They say timing is everything, and this rings true when filing for bankruptcy.

Deciding to file for personal bankruptcy is a major life decision, and should not be jumped into lightly. Check out the advice given in this article so that you can have an idea of what you can expect before you make such an important decision. Prepare yourself by learning as much as possible beforehand.

TIP! Once you have determined that you have no alternative to bankruptcy, educate yourself on all the areas of bankruptcy laws, in your state, as much as possible. Your future finances are in jeopardy, so you must be prepared and stay proactive by being involved with your attorney and your case.

There are two different kinds of personal bankruptcy you can file for: Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. There is a wealth of information online about each type of bankruptcy and their respective pluses and minuses. If there is anything that you don?t understand, go over it with your lawyer so that you can make the best decision.

TIP! You should not have to pay for a consultation with a bankruptcy attorney. Make sure you ask lots of questions.

Determine the type of bankruptcy that is best for you and your situation. There are a few types of bankruptcy. Research each type before filing. Consider the pluses and minuses of each type of bankruptcy and seek out the advice of a financial adviser.

TIP! If, after you file a Chapter 7 petition, you learn that the homestead exemption does not apply, it might be possible to convert your case to a Chapter 13. Since it may be better to file Chapter 13 rather than Chapter 7, make sure your attorney presents all of your options to you.

If your finances are tight and you are considering filing for personal bankruptcy, why not put your plans for getting a divorce on the back burner? It is not uncommon for individuals to seek a divorce only to immediately file for bankruptcy due to unforeseen financial difficulty. Reconsidering divorce can be a very smart option.

TIP! After you have declared bankruptcy, you may have a hard time being approved for unsecured credit. This being the case, look at secured card options.

Avoid exhausting your savings or emptying your retirement accounts to pay off creditors if you are considering filing for bankruptcy. Retirement funds should be avoided at all costs. Dipping into savings may need to happen, just don?t totally wipe it out, or you might not have much financial security later.

TIP! Look into filing Chapter 13 bankruptcy. You are probably eligible for Chapter 13 if your income is consistent and your unsecured debt is under $250,000.

Review bankruptcy rules before you file your petition. There are many laws which govern bankruptcy; therefore, to protect your bankruptcy case, know the rules. Small errors could even cause your case to be dismissed. Take time to research things related to personal bankruptcy before you move forward. This will ensure your bankruptcy will go smoothly.

TIP! Prior to filing for bankruptcy, purge from your vocabulary the word ?shame?. This process is less that glamorous, and it makes most people lose their self-esteem.

Individuals often seek to file for personal bankruptcy protection if their debts exceed their ability to repay them. If this is the case for you, you should begin to investigate the legislation in your state. Laws differ from one state to the other. Your house is safe in certain states; however, in other states, it isn?t. Do you research about legal ins and outs in your state before you begin the bankruptcy process.

TIP! Do some research to find out which assets you could lose by filing for personal bankruptcy. There are several assets which are exempt from bankruptcy; therefore, consult the Bankruptcy code.

Write down a list of every debt you have. This will be included in your bankruptcy filing, so include every entity that you know you owe money to. Go over all your financial records and do not forget anything. Take care not to miss any debts that you need to disclose, or you will be responsible for paying them back after you have filed for bankruptcy.

TIP! Be certain you understand all you can about bankruptcy by researching reputable sites that offer good information. The United States Run a quick Internet search to find out all the different agencies you should be contacting or visiting via the web to find out what you can.

Before picking a bankruptcy lawyer, speak with more than one, since most offer a consultation for free. Ensure that your meeting is actually with the attorney, not with a paralegal or an assistant. People in these positions are unable to offer legal advice. Looking for an attorney will help you find a lawyer you feel good around.

TIP! There is no requirement to dispose of every debt you have when you file for bankruptcy. You can pay off a portion of your debts after restructuring them by filing under Chapter 13.

Try to stay in contact with your creditors even if you are unable to pay the full amount of your bill. If you agree to anything with any lender, you need to get it in writing. Ask for written agreements whenever you and your creditor come to an understanding.

TIP! Always be honest when filling out paperwork. Remember that if you hide your valuable assets or income from your bankruptcy trustee, you may risk a number of penalties and complications.

Bankruptcy is not a something that simply happens, as this article has proven to you. You must do a wide variety of things correctly. By following the above advice, you will make fewer mistakes and find yourself better prepared

F Is For ?Fat? ? Childhood ObesityYour Health Journal | Your Health ...

From The Battle Creek Examiner?..

It?s been an alarming few days of obesity-related news. First, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released the results of its ?F as in Fat? report, projecting that half of U.S. adults will be obese by 2030 unless Americans make drastic dietary changes.

The New York Times reported, according to data published by the University of Illinois at Chicago, white people lacking a high school diploma are experiencing sharp drops in life expectancy. There are many possible reasons, but the skyrocketing rate of obesity is a known suspect.

Tuesday marked the release of the most recent report from Mission: Readiness, an organization of about 300 retired generals, admirals and senior civilian military leaders who are trying to spread the word that obesity, and specifically childhood obesity, is nothing short of a dire national security risk.

?Still Too Fat to Fight,? the follow-up to a similarly titled report from 2010, takes on one of my pet peeves: cheap junk foods that are readily available in our schools. According to Mission: Readiness, students in the U.S. consume almost 400 billion calories from junk food sold at schools each year.

This will come as no surprise to anyone who has spent time in high schools ? especially those in lower-income communities ? where students turn down free or reduced-price breakfasts or lunches in favor of sacks of salty snacks and high-sugar beverages.

The report features some cringe-worthy statistics: One in four young adults is unable to serve in the military because of excess body fat, and many of the ones who do to enlist are at high risk of injury. The military?s health insurance system, according to Mission: Readiness, spends ?well over $1 billion a year on treating weight-related diseases such as diabetes and heart disease? in addition to musculoskeletal injuries resulting from inadequate physical fitness and low levels of bone density that may be related to the plunge in dairy intake and a corresponding rise in consumption of sugary drinks over the past 35 years.

Extreme climate change linked to early animal evolution

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? An international team of scientists, including geochemists from the University of California, Riverside, has uncovered new evidence linking extreme climate change, oxygen rise, and early animal evolution.

A dramatic rise in atmospheric oxygen levels has long been speculated as the trigger for early animal evolution. While the direct cause-and-effect relationships between animal and environmental evolution remain topics of intense debate, all this research has been hampered by the lack of direct evidence for an oxygen increase coincident with the appearance of the earliest animals -- until now.

In the Sept. 27 issue of the journal Nature, the research team, led by scientists at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, offers the first evidence of a direct link between trends in early animal diversity and shifts in Earth system processes.

The fossil record shows a marked increase in animal and algae fossils roughly 635 million years ago. An analysis of organic-rich rocks from South China points to a sudden spike in oceanic oxygen levels at this time -- in the wake of severe glaciation. The new evidence pre-dates previous estimates of a life-sustaining oxygenation event by more than 50 million years.

"This work provides the first real evidence for a long speculated change in oxygen levels in the aftermath of the most severe climatic event in Earth's history -- one of the so-called 'Snowball Earth' glaciations," said Timothy Lyons, a professor of biogeochemistry at UC Riverside.

The research team analyzed concentrations of trace metals and sulfur isotopes, which are tracers of early oxygen levels, in mudstone collected from the Doushantuo Formation in South China. The team found spikes in concentrations of the trace metals, denoting higher oxygen levels in seawater on a global scale.

"We found levels of molybdenum and vanadium in the Doushantuo Formation mudstones that necessitate that the global ocean was well ventilated. This well-oxygenated ocean was the environmental backdrop for early animal diversification," said Noah Planavsky, a former UCR graduate student in Lyons's lab now at CalTech.

The high element concentrations found in the South China rocks are comparable to modern ocean sediments and point to a substantial oxygen increase in the ocean-atmosphere system around 635 million years ago. According to the researchers, the oxygen rise is likely due to increased organic carbon burial, a result of more nutrient availability following the extreme cold climate of the 'Snowball Earth' glaciation when ice shrouded much of Earth's surface.

Lyons and Planavsky argued in research published earlier in the journal Nature that a nutrient surplus associated with the extensive glaciations may have initiated intense carbon burial and oxygenation. Burial of organic carbon -- from photosynthetic organisms -- in ocean sediments would result in the release of vast amounts of oxygen into the ocean-atmosphere system.

"We are delighted that the new metal data from the South China shale seem to be confirming these hypothesized events," Lyons said.

The joint research was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the NASA Exobiology Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Besides Lyons and Planavsky, the research team includes Swapan K. Sahoo (first author of the research paper) and Ganqing Jiang (principal investigator of the study) of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Brian Kendall and Ariel D. Anbar of Arizona State University; Xinqiang Wang and Xiaoying Shi of the China University of Geosciences (Beijing); and UCR alumnus Clint Scott of United States Geological Survey.

Fundamental Content Marketing Strategies

by Carolyn Cohn

Content strategy is the building and execution of the content on the Internet. If your strategy is effective, it will help your business achieve its goals through exposure and acquiring more online traffic. There are many tricks that can help.

If you are just starting out with social media or you are, at the most, a novice, you may be strategizing in a way that is not as effective as it could be. There are many different strategic approaches that you can take but it is important to understand clearly which ones work most effectively for your particular business and which ones you should spend time getting involved with because you won?t reap the benefits for your business in as powerful a way as you hope.

Choose the best target audience

Before you write a single word of content, it is critical that you choose your target audience. If you have the most incredible content that ever existed but you are writing for the wrong audience, it definitely will not achieve the desired results for your business. The goals that you want to achieve are capturing the attention of the search engines, capturing the attention of other websites, and generating a great deal of traffic in turn. It is definitely worth your while to take the time and effort to research your target audience so that you choose the absolutely most appropriate audience possible.

Putting all of your eggs in one basket

It is very important that you diversify when it comes to social media channels and interactions. Of course, your content strategy is an extension of who you are and what you represent. However, it is not enough to merely share well-written content. You must also share valuable links and interact effectively in order to be successful.

Excellent content

If you present top-quality content, you will get a great deal of attention. Your content must be clear and concise and it must make people want to continue reading what you are sharing with them. Under no circumstances should it sound like a sales pitch or have any flavor of insincerity. Of course, it is also very important that you pay close attention to the basics?it should be free of grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors. If you have errors of any kind, people will definitely notice and it will most likely be distracting enough to dissuade them from continuing to read your content.

Place your content in the most effective places

It is not going to help you if you get your content read through the back door. You should not post to websites that need to use other website?s content. You want to promote your business in a direct and sincere manner. Before you post your content anywhere, you should determine the most effective places to put it and you will see that your choices will pay off.

Making your content as appealing as possible

When you post content, you want to make it as appealing as possible for your readers. Don?t be afraid to include images, if you feel that it will enhance the appeal. Depending on your topic, graphics may make all of the difference when it comes to how much your readers pay attention, want to keep reading, and want to share your content with others.

Conclusion

Tricks are very effective when it comes to content strategy and how effective you can be for your business. Of course, it is very important that you use those tricks wisely and that you don?t overdue it. You must not cross boundaries. At the end of the day, your success is a result of the same thing that everyone else?s success is based on: hard work and unlenting, consistent effort. You should also remember to offer an interesting variety of information so that you not only capture the attention of your readers with one article but so that you entice them into wanting to read whatever you are offering whenever they see your name.

Gay marriage NY arguments put US lawyer on defense

(AP) ? A federal appeals court panel forced a Justice Department lawyer into an awkward position Thursday, making him explain the government's decision to abandon defending the Defense of Marriage Act as judges decide the fate of a law destined for the U.S. Supreme Court.

"In my day, when you won, you didn't appeal," a smiling Chief Judge Dennis Jacobs of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals told Acting Assistant Attorney General Stuart Delery after Delery rose from his seat near lawyers defending the law even as he seemed to speak out against it.

Later, Judge Chester Straub demanded to know why the government quit defending the constitutionality of a 1996 law that defines marriage as involving a man and a woman after having spoken in favor of it for nearly 15 years.

Delery said the switch came in early 2011 at the direction of President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder after the administration reviewed the law and concluded that it deserved a stricter view of what constituted discrimination than the legal reasoning that had previously been applied.

Months from now, the 2nd Circuit is expected to rule whether Manhattan Judge Barbara Jones was right when she found the law unconstitutional in June, just like several other federal judges and a federal appeals court in Boston have done.

Repeatedly, Delery spoke about discrimination in America against people over their sexual choices.

"Gay and lesbian people have been subjected to a long history of discrimination that continues to this day," he said.

He called the expression of sexual orientation "an integral part of human freedom."

Yet, he added: "It's still the case that the rights of gays and lesbians usually lose when put up for a vote."

He said it was "crystal clear" that passage of the law was "motivated in significant part by disapproval of gay and lesbian people."

Straub responded with a snap: "Did you tell that to Congress in 1996, what you just now told us?"

Delery said some letters may have been sent to some representatives at the time.

"What is it that changed your view?" Straub demanded before Delery explained the February 2011 switch by Obama and Holder.

Jones ruled that the law intrudes upon the states' regulation of domestic relations. Her decision came after Edith Windsor sued the government in November 2010 because she was told to pay $363,053 in federal estate tax after her partner of 44 years, Thea Spyer, died in 2009. They had married in Canada in 2007.

The law, which denies federal recognition of same-sex marriages and affirms the right of states to refuse to recognize such marriages, was passed by Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton after it appeared in 1993 that Hawaii might legalize gay marriage. Since then, many states have banned gay marriage but several have approved it, including Massachusetts and New York. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said last week she believes the Defense of Marriage Act will reach the Supreme Court within the next year.

Lawyer Paul Clement, speaking on behalf of the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group of the House of Representatives, which is defending the law, told the appeals court that the Defense of Marriage Act was consistent with the intention of Congress to continue "preserving programs the way they've always been ? not opening these programs to others."

He said the desire to save the government money was a rational basis for the law as well, though "you can't go about that rational basis in an irrational way."

As an example, he said the government cannot deny benefits to blue-eyed people.

(AP) ? It's a campaign believed to be unprecedented in its size and aggressiveness: New York City is handing out the morning-after pill to girls as young as 14 at more than 50 public high schools, sometimes even before they have had sex.

The effort to combat teen pregnancy in the nation's largest city contrasts sharply with the views of politicians and school systems in more conservative parts of the country.

Valerie Huber, president of the National Abstinence Education Association in Washington, calls it "a terrible case once again of bigotry of low expectations" ? presuming that teen girls will have sex anyway, and effectively endorsing that.

But some doctors say more schools should follow New York's lead.

Emergency contraception is safe and effective "if you use it in a timely fashion. It provides relief or solace to a young woman or man who has made a mistake but doesn't want to have to live with that mistake for the rest of their lives," said Dr. Cora Breuner, a Seattle physician and member of an American Academy of Pediatrics' committee on teen health.

Plan B emergency contraception is about 90 percent effective at preventing pregnancy if taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex.

New York's program was phased in in the 1-million-student school system beginning about four years ago. Nurse practitioners or physicians dispense the pills, and parents can sign an opt-out form preventing their daughters from taking part.

Only about 1 to 2 percent of parents have opted out, according to the city Health Department.

The program is seen a way to reduce a startling number: More than 7,000 New York City girls ages 15 to 17 get pregnant each year. More than two-thirds of those pregnancies end in abortions.

"We are committed to trying new approaches ...to improve a situation that can have lifelong consequences," the Health Department said in a statement.

In the 2011-12 school year, 576 girls got the pills, said Deborah Kaplan, an assistant health commissioner.

Felicia Regina, Parent Association president at Port Richmond High on Staten Island, has two teens at the school, a junior and a senior, and said she has never heard any parents voice objections.

"I do think it's a good idea," she said. "The children nowadays are not going to abstain from sexual intercourse. How many unwed mothers do we need?"

Anne Leary, a conservative blogger in Chicago whose children are in their 20s, said the idea is ill-advised and undermines parents' authority. Her own children attended high school in a Chicago suburb and had to get a note from a parent or doctor just to get an aspirin.

"These kids are under 16, which is the age for statutory rape in most states. I just think it's subsidizing and encouraging behavior that's probably not healthy for kids that age," Leary said.

New York City's schools already offer regular birth control pills, condoms and other contraception, just as many other schools around the country do. But emergency contraception is especially controversial.

Many scientists say Plan B works by blocking ovulation or fertilization. But Plan B's label says it may also prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus, and conservative activists who believe life begins at conception contend it amounts to an abortion pill.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says Plan B does not cause abortion or encourage risky sex, and it has called for the sale of the morning-after pill over the counter to help prevent teen pregnancies.

Last year, however, the Obama administration blocked plans to put the pills on drugstore shelves, keeping them behind the pharmacy counter. The contraceptive requires a prescription for those under 17 but is available to older women without a prescription if they show pharmacists proof of age.

Opposition to making Plan B available over the counter came mostly from conservatives and religious groups who said such a step would promote underage sex.

At least one high school in a Los Angeles neighborhood with a high teen pregnancy rate also offers emergency contraception in a partnership with Planned Parenthood.

Teen pregnancies have declined in recent years nationwide, a trend attributed partly to increased use of birth control.

The most recent government figures show the rate was about 70 pregnancies per 1,000 girls ages 15 through 19 in 2008. New York City's rate was 82 per 1,000 births that year, and dropped to 73 per 1,000 in 2010. Nationwide, about 43 percent of girls ages 15 to 19 have had sex.

Some students on their way Tuesday to New York's Fashion Industries High School said they knew emergency contraception was available there, while others did not.

Glenesha Fernandez, a ninth-grader, said her mother opted out. "I said 'OK, I don't care,'" Glenesha said.

Yerenia Aybar, another ninth-grader, said girls her age shouldn't get the pill. "It might make students think it's OK to have sex," she said.

7 Quotes from Leaders of The Best

marcus_erb

Owners have a lot on their plate, so why add being a great workplace? Amidst the hundreds of decisions and discussions demanding attention daily, it seems natural that an owner's focus would fall solely on keeping the lights on, and not employees' experiences.

Yet even in today's economic uncertainty, many owners still make it a priority.

To find out why, we asked some of leaders of the companies that made the 2011 Best Small & Medium Workplaces list. Their motivations ranged widely, from outpacing the innovation curve to just creating a workplace they enjoy.

Here's what they said:

  • Happy employees, happy customers: "It's hard to get your dream job. But most people can and do enjoy their work if they can get personal satisfaction from it and do it in a pleasant environment. So if we've created the best workplace possible, the natural result of that is happy employees making customers happy, which usually has a positive effect on the bottom line, making it easier to improve the work environment. That's a win all the way around, and it's exciting to keep that wheel turning." -- Tim Hohmann, "company captain," AutomationDirect
  • Internal brand excellence: "We live and work in a very different environment than companies did even five years ago.? The pace of innovation and use of technology in business, especially with social media, means that a company's internal 'brand' for its employees is as important, if not more important, than its external brand image.? Word gets around very quickly about the company culture." -- John Saaty, chief executive officer, Decision Lens
  • Avoiding the mistakes of others: "I had worked for other people and other companies for 15 years before I started FatWallet, so I had plenty of experience and motivation to not do it that way." -- Tim Storm, founder and CEO, FatWallet
  • Personal values: "I like making people happy. It's one of the reasons I'm in the game business in the first place. What we do as a company is to provide millions of people with entertaining experiences. In other words, Insomniac makes gamers happy. But on a personal level, I feel even more fulfilled seeing the people on our team truly enjoying themselves." -- Ted Price, president and CEO, Insomniac Games
  • Run a better business: "Building trust through consistent two-way communication is at the heart of a great workplace. The bi-product of listening to your employees, soliciting their input on a regular and consistent basis is that we learn how to run the business better. They become the catalysts of great changes in our business." -- Dwight Cooper, CEO, Professional Placement Resources
  • Maximize potential: "Personally, I want to maximize life, and I want our organization to maximize its opportunity and life in its own right.?The best way to ensure that any organization maximizes its potential is to get the right people on the bus and then to provide them with an incredible culture in which to thrive -- one in which they love coming to work every day, are getting better every day because of the people they're rubbing shoulders with, and one that they want to strongly recommend to other all-stars. ?It doesn't guarantee success, but it gives you a heck of a lot better chance for it than if you don't have it." -- Shawn Boyer, CEO, Snagajob.com??
  • Being part of something great: "Walking through the doors of Upshot every day and feeling the positive mojo that our great culture and happy, engaged people generate motivates me the most. You feel it immediately, that sense of something exceptional happening here. That's a great feeling that I want to perpetuate. I also believe that being a great place to work is the difference between being a good company and a great company. When a company truly cares about its people, nurtures the culture, defines the purpose, creates a great environment and offers challenging work, great things happen. Striving to be a great place to work is not easy, but it's definitely worth it." -- Brian Kristofek, president & CEO, Upshot

How To Buy And Avoid Costly Mistakes | Eric Chua : Life, Business ...

Purchasing property can be nerve-wracking, but life-changing. Though, the stress in buying a house can be reduced with the right information. If you read these tips, buying a home can be a better experience.

Before buying a home, get an inspector to examine it. If you skip the inspection, you might discover hidden problems after you?ve already bought the house, and these problems may be expensive or difficult to fix. Not only do surprise renovations cost you money you don?t want to spend, if they?re really serious, you might have to find another place to live while the work is being done.

If you want a great investment in buying property, you should think about repairing and remodeling it. This increases the value of your investment by boosting its resale value. Sometimes your property value will increase more than the money you put in.

TIP! If your employment isn?t steady, you may want to reconsider a home purchase until it becomes so. Putting your signature on the mortgage means that, regardless of events, you are solely responsible for your payments.

If you plan to purchase all or some of a building for opening a business, be sure it is in a good neighborhood with ample growth opportunities. Opening your business in a terrible neighborhood can prevent you from having a large client base. Talk to a real estate professional to find out what locations are ideal for starting up a new business.

If you are considering purchasing a house that has a view, avoid paying high premiums for view lots. You may feel that the view is worthy of the extra amount, but others may not agree when it is time to resell. You can buy the home because you enjoy the view, but you do not have to overpay.

Be sure to save up the down payment your mortgage loan servicing company requires. Otherwise you may have to end up paying PMI, which is private mortgage insurance. This means you have to spend extra money every month just to prove you can afford your payments without actually working toward paying back your mortgage.

TIP! When looking at details about potential home purchases, remember to check for adequate parking if you own an automobile. This is even more important if the home lacks a driveway.

Do a little investigative work of your own by measuring the home before you purchase. Make sure your home?s square feet is listed correctly on the public record. If the discrepancy between the numbers is more than a hundred square feet, think twice about making an offer on this listing or start investigating why the discrepancy exists.

Make sure you qualify for a loan before you start looking for a home. You don?t want to discover the home you love without being able to pay for it. Securing financing can take a long time, and you don?t want to lose your house waiting for that loan.

When purchasing a home, hire all of your own support people. You may want to take the easy way out and work with the people the seller chose, but that is a bad idea. That way, you could get these services for free, instead of having to pay for them. With that having been said, it is still in your best interests to hire your own workforce so that you have people that you can personally hold accountable. If you are sure you get the truth from the beginning, you can save yourself a lot of money and stress later on.

TIP! You must understand well the terms used in mortgage loans before purchasing a home. You are less likely to be confused later if you understand upfront how the term of the mortgage influences the amount of the monthly payment and your total cost over the entire life of the loan.

If you have found a home that you are considering buying, be sure to get online and research the registry for local sex offenders. Although sex offender registries are available to the public, real estate agents are under no obligation to disclose information to potential buyers about registered sex offenders in the neighborhood. Ask people around the neighborhood, and verify the information with your own research using reliable resources.

Having an approval letter in hand will make you more attractive to sellers. If you wait to get your approval letter, it will increase the length of time it takes to actually purchase the house, and could prove to be more expensive.

TIP! Hire professional inspectors to inspect the house that you are planning to buy. Don?t be tempted to allow a friend or relative to do the home inspection in order to avoid having to pay a professional.

Write down all the important questions that you need to ask potential real estate agents. Ask all of the important questions, like how many houses they have helped to sell this last year, and what is the number of homes they sold that are in the area you are looking at? A good agent will be able to answer all your questions.

By implementing the preceding advice, the process of purchasing a home should be simpler and should go more smoothly. If you know what you?re in store for when purchasing a property, half the battle is
