Dallas home owners who spend time biking around the city limits share a similar sentiment: something is missing. And that something is bike lanes in one of the country?s largest cities. For a long time, the city has had plans to construct a bike network that would stripe the city with bike lanes, but Dallas home owners are left wondering, ?When??

Now, Oak Cliff home owners have one of the first ?real? bike lanes in Dallas right in their own backyard. The bike-friendly neighborhood is proud of their striped piece of history, the first of its kind on city streets dedicated exclusively to bicycles. The only other bike lane is a shared space on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard by Fair Park.

But Oak Cliff?s version is exclusive to bike riders. It?s the city?s first and only buffered bike lane that travels past Rosemont Elementary School on Mary Cliff Road. Oak Cliff home owners have been working with the city for a year to get the bike lane installed. Adds?Bike Friendly Oak Cliff co-founder Zac Lytle,??It took a long time for (the city) to get everything in place, from funding to communication between various departments,? he said. A dedicated and buffered bike lane makes it less likely for cyclists to have a run-in with a vehicle.

The bike lane at Rosemont is short, running less than a quarter of a mile between Ranier and Taft, but it?s progress nonetheless.??This is something to celebrate,? Lytle said.
