Green Sports Alliance Comes to New York

Today the Green Sports Alliance announced that their third annual Summit will be held in New York City, from August 26th to 28th 2013.

gsalogo.pngIt may be tough to top the epic launch of the Green Sports Alliance Environmental Leadership Award, bestowed upon MLB Commissioner Bud Selig, at the second annual Summit in Seattle this past September. Nevertheless, the New York event will also mark several significant firsts for the Alliance.

1. It will be the first time that the Alliance Summit is held on the East Coast, in recognition of the Alliance?s impressive increase in sports team and venue members from across the continent.

?The Green Sports Alliance has seen significant membership growth across North America since its inception and the 2013 Summit location reflects our geographical diversity,? says Scott Jenkins, Chairman of the Green Sports Alliance and Vice President of Ballpark Operations at the Seattle Mariners.

Since its founding in mid-2010 by NRDC, Paul Allen?s Vulcan Inc. and six professional sports teams, the Alliance?s membership has grown to nearly 150 teams and venues from across 14 leagues.

?We?re excited to bring the Summit to the East Coast to showcase the great strides teams and venues in the region have made in sustainable practices and stakeholder engagement,? explains Jenkins. ?And, to continue to help advance the green sports movement.?

2. It will be the first time that the Alliance Summit will include a workshop devoted entirely to collegiate sports greening. The session will provide a forum for students, athletes, and collegiate sports administrators, among many others, to learn from and share better practices in professional and collegiate sports greening.

3. It will also be the first time that the Alliance, in partnership with NRDC?s Collegiate Sports Greening Project, will feature a series of sports greening resources devoted to collegiate athletics and recreation. Yes, that means, collegiate athletic and recreation departments check back for more!, as the Alliance and NRDC release more information about the first-ever athletics greening toolkits and publications on leading collegiate sports greening programs. ?
